Boy Keeps Dad Alive For 10 Days After Fall

Peter Asumani's teacher worried when a student didn't show up for school for four days.

As it turns out, the 10-year-old wasn't cutting class -- he was saving his father's life.

Peter cared for his father, Bienvenu Asumani, 45, for ten days after the older man slipped on a wet floor and was unable to get up, the Lincoln Journal Star reported.

Police found the boy and his father at their home in Lincoln, Neb., after Jeff Rust, the principal from Hartley Elementary School, called to report Peter's four-day absence.

In an affidavit filed with Lancaster County Juvenile Court, Investigator Cynthia Koenig-Warnke said she found Bienvenu Asumani lying on a footstool inside his home, unable to speak or answer questions, but his eyes were open and he was breathing.

According to court documents, Peter told Koenig-Warnke he had given his father food and fluids for more than a week after he fell, unable to move or use the bathroom. Peter told officials he was unable to communicate with his father.

Reports said it was unclear if the boy was aware of the 911 emergency phone system or if he tried to get help from a neighbor. Father and son live alone: Peter told police his mother lives in Africa and their closest relatives are in Arizona.

Bienvenu Asumani was transferred to Bryan Medical Center for treatment.

Judge Linda Porter granted permission to place Peter with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services while his father is treated.

I’m sorry. 10 years old — that’s like 4th grade. There should be no way a 10-year-old wouldn’t know about 911.

If the house had a phone, the kid should have called the police, or the fire services.

If the house caught fire, would the kid have spent 10 days trying to put it out himself?

Truly strange. Nice of the boy, but wouldn’t you think he’d think at least about hospitals and taxis? Maybe a phone book to call relevant help?

My thoughts exactly! The article makes the kid appear dumb as a rock, smart enough to give his Dad food and water but not smart enough to get help. Damn even Lassie knew how to get help when Timmy fell down the well!

Mother is in Africa? Sounds like illegals or at least foreigners. May be why kid didn’t contact anyone.

I guess 45 years old is “an older man” if you’re from Africa.

Sadder still, from what I understand, the father died anyway : |

May God rest the man’s soul, and bring comfort to the son.

Didn't even walk next door to tell a neighbor. Does the father not work or have any friends? All sounds rather suspicious.

There should be no way a 10-year-old wouldn’t know about 911.

Unless you don't have a phone..........There ARE immigrants who don't and are totally unaware that "911" exists.....

If the house had a phone, the kid should have called the police, or the fire services.

Once again, another IF.......Just because YOU have a phone does not mean this father and son, who are obviously immigrants from Africa, do.

If the house caught fire, would the kid have spent 10 days trying to put it out himself?

We'll never know will we?

FWIW, If my aunt had testicles she would have been my uncle

Here in Seattle we import a lot of Somalis. Apparently they are not illegal since they are brought in, given discounted housing and do not speak English.

Probably the boy does not speak English and can only attend school because, like here, maybe they have 51 languages going in the public schools.

The mother is probably waiting for her green card before she can arrive.

The whole situation is very sad. For us as the public and for this family.

And the teacher just ‘worried for four days’?

Hello, if you spank a child, there’ll be knocking on your door soon afterwards.

Don’t worry, he’ll be suspended for another four days for missing school.

Reminds me of the Somali immigrants in San Diego who fired up a hibatchi on the wood floor of their apartment and burned the joint down. Apparently they are not given instruction in Civilization 101 before they emigrated.

They have an “absent hotline” or something in our school systems. If you don’t call ahead saying your child is sick that day and they don’t show up for the first period attendance you get a call right away to check on them.

Not sure what happens if they can’t get ahold of anyone. Although I DO know in our town they want you to call 911 if you see ANYTHING is suspicious, so I imagine they would have a squad car swing by.

Even when I was a kid I thought Timmie was
a dork. If he lived in my neighborhood Lassie
would have gotten tired of having to save him
from getting beat-up.

More likely Somali’s or nationals of another nation with similar issues carted to the US as refugees because they’re “oppressed”...

Update:

Lincoln, Nebraska (DNS) A nine year old boy who missed school while keeping his crippled father alive for ten days was arrested this morning by local police at the behest of public school administrators.

Stafford Schools Superintendent Roy Smails explained that, “This is a sad case, but rules are rules. Students must learn that attendance and school funding are paramount.”

The boy, who’s name is being withheld because he is a minor, has already been transferred from the Polk County Jail to Warrenton Correctional Institute, a medium security prison.

According to Smails, prison is the appropriate treatment for extreme truancy cases. “As we all know, children are state property, and it is our job as school administrators to assure that every child is given the opportunity to fully support school budgets. One bone-headed decision in this case cost the Lincoln School District over five hundred dollars.”

Smails recalled that, last month, an eight year old girl was flogged and deported to North Korea for missing three weeks of school due to the flu. School officials argued at the time that a few years in a collectivist state is not a punishment, but rather an educational experience

Lincoln school officials also plan to charge the truant ten year old boy with felony child abuse. “One might ask”, observed Smails, “how a child can abuse himself. Unfortunately, confidentiality rules prevent me from explaining our actions.”

In other news, the now comatose father of the boy has been charged with child abandonment, and will be arrested if and when he regains conciousness.

No argument there with Timmy! But that’s why God gave us dogs, there is no limit to their love and devotion, no matter how big a jerk owns them.
