In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

metonymy [mi-ton-uh-mee]

hear it pronounced

noun

a figure of speech that consists of the use of the name of one object or concept for that of another to which it is related, or of which it is a part, as “scepter” for “sovereignty,” or “the bottle” for “strong drink,” or “count heads (or noses)” for “count people.”

Origin: 1540–50; < Late Latin metōnymia < Greek metōnymía change of name;

metonym (noun): a word used in a metonymy. For example “Foggy Bottom” is a metonym for the United States Department of State, which is located in that neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

He’s doing ok, thanks for asking. He will be better after the stone is dissolved and the stent removed, but he’s getting along ok in the meantime.

Maybe part of a sentence? Me to NY my....? Or meaning really boring as in “a very metonymyous job”. The example of “Froggy Bottom” would work since boring days really drag.

But races are called “drag” races so how can a race drag? Unless the drivers dress funny under those jumpsuits?
