Nothing worse than they accomplished with box cutters. The difference is that other passengers could carve them up the next time.

I never felt unsafe flying. No one is ever going to take over a plane with a box cutter again. We're wise to that trick. (That's why they had to hit as many planes in the air at the same time as they could on 9/11. It was a gambit designed only to work once.) When they pull the next terrorist trick out of their hats, I'd feel safer if the average passenger was armed with better than a sharpened credit cards and a ballpoint pen.

Defending yourself is one thing but remember that 9/11 hijackers only had box knives.

The problem wasn't that the bad guys had knives - the problem was that the good guys didn't. Or at least not in sufficient numbers.

I absolutely agree. They should allow big knifes on too. Listen to some of the wusses even on our side.

What I am saying is the DHS has no coherent thinking in their decisions. Of course the passengers on 9-11 thought it was just a hi-jacking. Today if someone pulled a boxcutter, they would be carved up with that boxcutter. However the DHS thinks it is a big deal that they now allow these minor weapons. THEY DO NOT THINK THE PASSENGERS ARE GUTSY ENOUGH TO FIGHT BACK. Remember the population of this country has become complacent sheep. They elect idiots, they believe whatever the media tells them, they have no original thoughts. So the DHS thinks that is the norm. I wil predict that soon the DHS will allow larger knives, larger bottles of liquid, stop the shoe inspections, etc. And the reason is they will not think anybody is going to try 9-ll again. It is the LIBERAL mindset. Nothing tried is not nothing gained, it is nothing will ever be tried again.

I don’t have an opinion as I plan to never board another plane except in case of extreme emergency involving my kids and grandkids.”

I’m right there with you except that my son and one grandson live close enough that I could get there by walking if I absolutely have to. It only takes 4 more hours to drive to where my other grandson lives compared to the amount of total time to get to the airport, park, check in, fly, rent a car, etc. So I may very well not fly again, unless I win the lottery and can charter my own aircraft. Before January 2012 I flew 12-15 times a year but no more.

I think airlines should handle their own security and decide what they want to allow. Get the government out of it.

When you start the post with that line how is anybody supposed to refute it? Seriously, point taken.

I said after learning about the heroes of Flight 93 and the (then) pending new regs that the TSA should be arming, not disarming, the passengers. I still believe that is true.

Absolutely. The boxcutter was not a weapon you can use to physically subdue a crowd. In fact, no knife is. For that matter, most guns aren’t effective crowd control weapons, though a plane is lousy terrain for charging a gunman. (Not that there is such a thing as good terrain for that.)

The boxcutters were used to take people hostage and initiate (we thought) the old take over a plane and fly around for a few hours or days and then the hijackers surrender or get stormed and you go home and write a book about your experiences routine. Had happened dozens of times. The passengers all followed procedure and did not resist.

On 9/11 nobody knew there was a new meme in town, but the guys on Flight 93 took less than a half hour to figure it out and launch a counterattack.

Nobody will ever take over a plane again. They might succeed in blowing one up, but there will be no more hijackings.

It is easy to refute it just give an example proving they are coherent or rational.

True story (and shows how dangerous and stupid TSA is).

During the Bush Aministration, one of his Secret Service agents had to catch a commercial flight somewhere and showed the TSA agent his Secret Service credentials as well as the loaded 9mm Glock he was carrying.

The TSA agent looked over the paperwork the Secret Service agent showed him and allowed him to board the aircraft after confiscating his tweezers!!

I think the word got to them to “lighten up on the little people, they are getting restless”, so bingo, now we can carry lacrosse sticks, plastic bats, TWO golf clubs, and tiny knives.

Or, they need to provoke some event to justify their existence, and a lacrosse stick- bat melee would fit the bill.

The knives they are talking about are the tiny knives with 2” blades less than 1/4” wide. You would be hard pressed to make a weapon out of it.

Exactly. Also, no locking blades. That really reduces the effectiveness as a stabbing weapon. If I had one of these knives on a plane and someone tried to take over the plane - I'd drop the knife and grab the nearest laptop, wielding it like a club.

About the only threat from these very small pocket knives is if the perp grabs someone from behind and holds it to their neck, demanding access to the flight deck or else...

We aren’t going to win this one. The “disarm everybody” crowd is out in force. Personally, I think
that every sane, law-abiding adult American citizen should be armed at all times and self regulated
(regulated in the Constitutional meaning, i.e., trained to handle ordnance), but that’s just me, I guess.

It's not just the knives. A small vintage bat is what can be called a “Billy Club”. Break a pool cue over your knee and you now have a pretty effective spear. Allowing these aboard planes is insanity. Does anyone give a damn for the safety of the flight attendants? If you had someone in your family that worked as air crew and whose personal safety was seriously compromised by this you may agree that it's not a very bright idea. John Pistole should be FIRED for gross incompetency.

Precisely. Far more lethal than a two inch knife. IMHO . There are many ways to defend oneself that people never consider using. Well said old bean.
