Gabrielle Giffords' husband Mark Kelly's purchase of rifle draws criticism from gun-rights groups

PHOENIX - The husband of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords went to a Tucson gun store a week ago to buy a .45-caliber handgun and a military-style rifle the day before he appeared with his wife at the supermarket where she was wounded in a rampage two years ago, and it didn't take long for the purchase to draw criticism from gun-rights supporters.

Mark Kelly said he bought the AR-15-style weapon to draw attention to the relative ease with which people can get the type of gun that the shooter used in the Newtown school and Colorado movie theater killings. Gun-rights advocates attacked him for being a hypocrite for buying the same gun that he has been lobbying Congress to ban.

Too bad he didn’t buy those weapons prior to his wife being shot.

The funny thing is, his wife was shot with a semiautomatic handgun. Of the two guns he bought last week, he now says (after being caught) that he’ll turn the rifle over to the Tuscon Police, but he is going to keep the semiautomatic handgun for himself.

Shouldn’t he be more concerned about the semiautomatic handgun, since that is the weapon that wounded his wife?

And an ill-conceived one at that. I can just imagine someone in his circle saying "Hey, why don't we . . ." and he's goes bowling off half-cocked (pun intended).

He should have gotten on Facebook, etc. and declared his intention first, then gone out and pulled it. He didn't, and is reaping the consequences.

Not only that, but in all the comments I have read, the compassion felt for Gabby's injury is rapidly being dissipated by his opportunistic parading her before every audience he can find. Jim Brady suffered the same fate and is even back-watered by the libs.

The irony is, all he did was prove he could pass the background check.

His leftist masters aren’t going after semi-auto handguns (right now). One thing about these useful idiots—they take orders well. Mark Kelly is such a sorry excuse for a man, that his own wife won’t take his name.

if this was a stunt to show how easy it was to get, and that he plannbed to turn it in to cops, why didn’t he bring the media with him, and some cops he was going to eventually hand it over to?

how would we have heard him lecturing about this and how would he have gotten this message out otherwise? he was silent until exposed.

and there’s your answer.

Does any FReeper know who the man behind the curtain is? These people are probably getting paid a lot of money for this behavior.

As far as I know, he went in alone. Those pictures were taken on a phone by someone in the shop.

Forgetting for a moment that this is a publicity stunt and therefore despicable, shouldn’t it be relatively easy for an otherwise law abiding citizen to purchase an AR-15? Were the Monty Python cardinals supposed to leap out and subject him to the Spanish Inquisition?

All he really proved is that a retired Navy Captain and NASA astronaut can pass a background check, which is as it should be.

They wouldn’t let him take the AR home so he went to Lowe’s and bought a ball peen hammer, duct tape, plastic sheeting and a bag of Depends. Said he was going on a road trip.
