First, computers do not just die as irreparable, and it may be worth the money to fix it. If you provide some info on what it does not do then FReepers may be able to help you.

As for buying a new one, you want something that is not going to be obsolete soon, and i would plan on spending at least 600.00 for that, and more if you buy Dell, etc.

Having done much prayerful research, i think this outfit offers the best deals, http://www.computerlx.com/products.aspx?category_ID=136 3 Year warranty (and lifetime free tech if i recall correctly).

Start at the 450-500.00 range and customize so as to increase the memory to 8gb and choose W/76b bit as the OS.

I like AMD based PCS (Intel was a major sponsor of the Boy Scouts bu punished them by withdrawing support bcz they upheld morality) This one here http://www.computerlx.com/config.aspx?t=&product_ID=1609 looks good to me, but upgrade the power supply to the Antec brand 400 watt (for reliability; 400 is enough for office work.)

I do not do gaming, and hope PCs will be used for good.

I only mentioned it, because he mentioned the need for a cheap option. They’re the cheapest around for an Intel/AMD platform.

Unless you are a computer guru/addict who has special needs for gaming or design work, don’t buy one with all the possible whistles and bells.

The very cheapest machines like the old Emachines product worked very well for about 1/3 the price for most users with normal computing needs. Shop around on sites like Tiger Direct or NewEgg or ebay for good prices.

Remember that most machines will begin to have problems after about three years so you’ll be faced with another purchase. The good news is that all the whistles and bells of today will probably be standard on the machines of three years hence.

Most people won’t need or ever fill up the huge storage space on some new machines. I’ve never exceeded the storage on any computer while it was still operational. RAM is the key to the average user’s happiness rather than Terrabytes of storage.

There are probably a lot of good buys right now on new machines with Windows 7 operating system. Windows 8 may be the wave of the future, but lots of folks think it is over rated as an OS for today.

here, windows computers are still expensive, but my step son just bought an android run computer without a cd/dvd or other fancy stuff on it for routine surfing. Much cheaper, even here in the Philippines. I have a small cheap android tablet but it’s slow and I’d have to buy a separate keyboard to type quickly to blog.

I’ve also used Linux/ubuntu and it wasn’t too hard.

Best place to go for advice: ask a teenage geek about it.

I hope all is well with you.
