dictionaries ad nauseam | 14 March 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

indite \in-DAHYT\, verb
1. to compose or write, as a poem.
2. to treat in a literary composition.
3. Obsolete. to dictate.
4. Obsolete. to prescribe.

Example sentences:
"Will it be any harm," he said to his friends, "in a piece you want to be written so low, if we should teach them how they should think and act in common cases, as well as indite?"
-- Samuel Richardson, A Quiet Corner in a Library, 1915

And then she called her father Sir Barnard and her brother Sir Tirry, and heartily she prayed her father that her brother might write a letter like as she did indite; and so her father granted her.
-- Sir Thomas Malory, Le Morte D'arthur, 1470

Etymology:
Appearing in English in the mid-1300s, this wordy word comes from the Latin root dictare meaning "to declare, dictate, or compose in words." Combined with the prefix in-, indite literally means "to put down in writing."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I didn’t want Dolan, he’s a bit too much of a joker for the position of supreme pontiff, IMO. He has a radio show on the Catholic channel on XM and the two guys on there anchoring the coverage were going wild at the prospect of him being the Pope.

I love Murder She Wrote. 2 episodes a day play on Hallmark, and it’s on a couple of other channels, as well. When it was on (originally) I used to fall asleep during its run on Sunday nights. I had an active family life then and was pretty tuckered out by the time it showed. I think I missed the end of every episode.

I think the episodes are well crafted, and they give us a chance to see many veteran actors who are no longer with us. I never have to be embarrassed by the scripts, either. And, I love most of Jessica’s wardrobe too, even though it is now more than 20 years old.

However, there was a retrospective a couple of years ago and Angela Lansbury appeared in the introduction. Perhaps it was on Biography. I was shocked at how old she looked. She stil looked good, but a lot older.

Naturally, I watch her every day looking like she did 20-30 years ago. I fully expect to see her looking the same! Of course, I think she is older than Elizabeth Taylor. Weren’t she and Taylor in National Velvet together? The character Angela played was older than Elizabeth’s, but maybe the character was just taller!

What is really interesting is when I catch an old movie with Lansbury playing a femme fatale. Or, wasn’t she the conniving mother in the Manchurian Candidate?

I love Dolan. He was our Archbishop before he went to NYC. He did wonders here rejuvenating our Seminary which hadn’t had a graduating class for 2 years before he came. Abp Weakland just about closed down the place. He did close down the Minor Seminary and turned it into a lavish apartment for himself for his retirement. Dolan put it up for sale.

Sorry, I’m younger than you are. “Murder She Wrote” is what parents watched when I was a kid. ;-)

I don’t hold it against you that you are younger, but obviously you were blessed with parents with good taste! ;-)

I have a daughter in law who once referred to Jessica Fletcher as “that old lady”. She’s been a good daughter in law in all other repects, however! LOL.

Angela Lansbury? I thought that was Paul McCartney in drag.

Waiting to see who gets it...

Feinstein needs a neuro workup. It seems she is having some issues with the head bobbing and shaking while listening to Cruz. I don’t mean that in a sarcastic way, but a medical one.

Frankly, I doubt there ARE any real Catholics in the Dem hierarchy.

Yes, I think he is AWESOME! I am still very happy with Pope Francis. I laughed out loud watching a couple of gay reporters trying to gush over St. Francis yesterday. Shep and Anderson Poofter didn’t really look happy about it. Why do they send gay reporters to the Vatican? Too funny, considering St. Francis considers gay marriage an abomination from the father of lies. I was very sad about our cable company dropping EWTN yesterday. It might be on the upstairs cable TV, but not the one by my computer. I would have switched channels to avoid the two gaysters.

That he said politicians who push abortion should be denied Communion is just icing on the cake. I am still smiling as I think of him.

He asked us to pray for him, while out running errands all day every time I thought of him I said a prayer and smiled. It is a joyous new season for the Church that we are in.

I wonder why John Boehner turned down the opportunity to attend Pope Francis’ installation with Joe Bite Me? Do you suppose that he was embarrassed to be seen with Uncle Joe at a Catholic function? Or, did he really have to work?

Cruz ‘n is bruisin’. Love it. Feinstein is too dumb to be a
Senator and is NOT in league with Cruz at all.

Thank you-I think so too. Feinswine didn’t need to confront two lawyers like that-I’ve heard that Cruz is a good attorney, and Cornyn was on the state court. And if the rights listed in the Bill of Rights aren’t absolute, then shouldn’t it be called the Bill of Chances? The Bill of Judicial Whims?

Sorry for the rant, but dumb remarks like that piss me off...

I think she’s just mad at the uppity Cuban from Texas-the only thing she didn’t say is “do you know who I am?”

I wouldn’t want to be seen with Biden at a Papal function, being a Catholic-Biden is a CINO, and not a convincing one...

My husband came in last night lamenting the fact that we didn’t have an “American” pope.....I told him he was nuts, that we most certainly DO have an American Pope. He spent a couple of minutes arguing with me before he gave up.
