GENEVA (AP) - Physicists said Thursday they are now confident they have discovered a crucial subatomic particle known as a Higgs boson - a major discovery that will go a long ways toward helping them explain why the universe is the way it is.
They made the statement following study of the data gathered last year from the world's largest atom-smasher, which lies beneath the Swiss-French border outside Geneva. The European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, said that what they found last year was, indeed, a version of what is popularly referred to as the "God particle."

This 24 hours has been very, very interesting. First a Pope from the Americas now finding the “God particle”.
Amazing discovery if true.
I’m not trying to hijack this thread, but can somebody tell me why even a minimally educated writer would say something like, “goes a long WAYS to helping them” and expect the reader to pay attention to the rest of the article.
They found a particle last year, and said it might be a Higgs boson. The current announcement is them saying “we’ve finished analyzing the data, and we’re now pretty sure it was a Higgs boson”.
More details from BBC
Educated has a very broad definition in Obama’s America.
From the excerpt above:
To what end?
I agree, when I see something like “it’s” for a possessive or “could care less” or other plainly ignorant implantings in articles I tend to discount the message.
I once heard compare using an “atom smasher” to figuring out how to build a car by crashing one into another car, then examining the wreck.
Heisenberg says “are you sure?”
Higgs boson particle
Did Leonard and Sheldon find it?
Was it under the couch?
Yesterday the scientists said they found the known “minor” particle not the “major” god particle they say they found today.
I tend to doubt it. But, on the positive side, scientists do and must acknowledge the existing of God as the creator if they found what he built.
This is perhaps one of the best questions one could ask. In the case of men like Hawking, Hitchens, Dawkins, et al, it is so they can fall into the darkness satisfied they proved that their lives were meaningless.
For others, it underscores the truthfulness of Paul's remarks. He observes the persuasion God gave some, "...that what was seen was not made out of things which are visible." turns out to be the case. And, the discovery will strengthen that persuasion.
Why does matter have mass? Isn’t this like asking why does whiteness have white in it?
If the Higgs boson is, as we’ve been told, THE definitive or “GOD” particle, then how is it that it only helps them understand and doesn’t completely answer the question of how the universe came to be. Is there another particle yet to be found which will supersede the “ultimate” one?
I would think the new Pope could explain why we have Mass. ;)
Oh... never mind. My dyslexic brain thought it said “Big Bosoms”...
A bunch of “scientist” scouring over data to *find* what no one can see? And they FOUND it??? SHAZAM!!!
This morning, I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I’ll never know.
Your comment makes more sense to me than the article.
"They're still trying to get the box open" said Professor Schroedinger...
oh that explains a lot(sarcasm). Also depends on what the definition of is is.
This bs article doesn't say anything . these morons know nothing.
Forget the “god” particle nonsense, it’s just sensationalism. This is just another particle, it isn’t the ultimate anything.
Must be time to submit the multi-billion dollar budget for their collided. “we think we found it, if you give us $5 billion more, we will KNOW we found it”
The Higgs is no more a God particle than any other particle. The name was a marketing gimmick for a book title and the press has run with it ever since.
This 24 hours has been very, very interesting. First a Pope from the Americas now finding the God particle....in Europe......
It was with all of my missing left socks.
Also, Higgs actually objects to people calling it the “God particle”
Who would have guessed? The Higgs-Boson was in the last place they looked.
Heisenberg also says Then where is it?........."and how fast was it going at the time?"........
"But the two experiments, CMS and ATLAS, hadn't collected enough data to say the particle was, for sure, the Higgs boson, the last undiscovered piece of the puzzle predicted by the Standard Model, the reigning theory of particle physics.
In other words, why does matter have inertia, and generates gravity.
If it doesn’t have mass then it doesn’t matter........
Grants! Lots of grants!
Now if we could just get them to find my car keys.
The “reason” (for everything in this reality) is found in Gods Word.
The caveat is what a child can understand is rejected by “educated” men because you must accept the truth, by faith, not logic.
This particle will never be found because our Creator needed nothing else but to Will what we experience as reality into being. When they find His Love they will discover what they really seek.
yes thats pretty heavy I know but everytime I see this God particle stuff I feel compelled to speak the truth. so sue me!
The “God particle” moniker was and is a journalistic construct (like “assault weapon”) based on a mistake by a journalist that got cemented in by repetition. Like “assault weapon”.
My father joined the National Guard in 1940. According to him the nickname “jeep” was applied to an Army staff car whose hood resembled the Popeye cartoon character “The Jeep”’s nose. Life Magazine did an article on “This is the Army” in which they misidentified the truck, quarter ton, 4 x 4 as “the jeep”. With the influx of millions of new soldiers into the Army with the onset of World War II, whose concept of the jeep was from the enormously influential Life Magazine, the misidentification stuck, unto this very day.

“...a major discovery that will go a long ways toward helping them explain why the universe is the way it is.”
If they really want to know why the universe is the way it is, all they have to do is read the Bible and believe it.
“Well, do you remember where you last had it?”
The God gene remains too complex to find yet they want us to believe we evolved randomly from slime.
Ironic isn’t it?
I don't exactly disagree, but physicists referred to it as the God damned particle because it was so elusive. The author originally wanted to name his book "The God Damned Particle", but there was some squeamishness about the name, on whatever grounds. The publisher liked the name "The God Particle" as an alternative, since it would give the book more shelf appeal than something more accurate and descriptive, like "The Intermediate Gravitational Boson". I agree, the name was devised as a way to sell books, but journalists grabbed on to it. The headline in your local paper declaring "Scientists Find God Particle" will attract more readers than "Physicist Claim Measurements Consistent With Observation of Intermediate Graviational Boson at the 95 Percent Confidence Level." For some odd reason.
Uhhh, because God created it?
