Why I love bass trombone
somewhere in Russia ^

TOPICS: Music/Entertainment
KEYWORDS:
I always thought of saxophone as 'work'. Tuba and bass trombone were 'fun'.

Look at this girl. She's beatiful, she's a good player, and that's a badass horn.

No, Laz, you can't have her.

My uncle played regularly in local quartets etc...I played as well. When he passed some years ago, a old buddy of his played an old hymn in blues style on his old trombone....i cant recall crying harder

Thanks for posting. Good stuff! Will show this to my kid who is a brass player.

Is that a contra bassoon beside her? Man....I took bassoon lessons in college (because I did music ed and HAD to) and I never could get the hang of a double reed. Finicky and temperamental and never could get a good crow. Loved tenor and bari sax, tho. :-)

Yes, contrabassoon. I tried to learn bassoon, like you, the double reed thing just didn’t happen.

I had a summer scholarship on bassoon and had no problem at all with the double reed (trick was to get it sufficiently moist). But playing any of the brass instruments was out of the question -- just no lip for them. Best I ever managed was a badly quavering C scale on the trumpet.

One interesting bit of advice I got from my bassoon instructor that summer (he was first chair in the Boston Symphony): He told me in all seriousness that if I intended to play professionally, I should plan on taking one month off every year -- this to avoid potential brain damage from the double-reed vibration.

My son plays and he is an offensive lineman. No real glory, but you can't compete without it.

Apropos this thread...

World's Largest Tuba

Oompah! Playing it can make you look slightly...uh...compromized, though.
