Researchers developing 3D printer, 'bio-ink' to create human organs

The long-term goal of this branch is to create functioning human organs some five or 10 years from now.

While bioprinters at other institutions use one arm with multiple heads to print multiple materials one after the other, the UI device with multiple arms can print several materials concurrently. This capability offers a time-saving advantage when attempting to print a human organ because one arm can be used to create blood vessels while the other arm is creating tissue-specific cells in between the blood vessels.

The first major goal is to make blood vessels. The next goal is to make the insulin producing portion of the pancreas to provide a functional cure to diabetes.

I had a crazy dream the other day where Jose Reyes was still a Met and he tore his hamstring and it was going to take a year to heal, but he chose to have his leg amputated and have a new leg 3D printed out so he could play the next day and I was working for a congressman or governor that wanted to stop John McCain who wanted to ban athletes from doing that.

Strange

But it will be interesting many years/decades from now if athletes instead of losing so much time can just cut off their limbs and print new ones to get back on the field sooner.

Screw Tommy John surgery if you can just “print” a whole new arm, or a 37 year old pitcher who lost a few mph of his fastball, just chop off the arm and print an arm equivalent to a 25 year olds and then they can pitch into their 60s throwing 95+mph.

A company called Organovo (ONVO) is already on this quest.

I miss my left kidney. I'd really like a replacement. On the other hand, my spleen and I hardly ever talked, so I'm sorta ambivalent about it.

Functional kidneys have already been printed. They still aren’t quite ready for prime time, but it shouldn’t be too much longer.
