I suspect this wasn’t Hindus who committed the rapes.

I have a suspicion the perpetrators were not Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain. It’s just a suspicion.

My wife and I love to travel and get off the beaten path...but I cannot imagine why anybody would want to bike and camp in India, anywhere in India, given 1) the warnings and 2) the many other opportunities.

women are prey everywhere sadly.....too many people pooh-pah attacks on women and will use every excuse in the book to exonerate the animals....”she shouldn’t have been there” and “she wanted it” and she was not “dressed” properly.....heard them all before...

Not to blame the victims but some research could have had their travel plans only in those areas with the best percentage of the people you mentioned. My guess is they were touring an area with a heavy Muslim population.

Madhya Pradesh has about 7% Muslims, and, unlike some places, they are not particularly brazen or conspicuous. Much more likely it’s a macho Hindu thing.

Madhaya Pradesh 92% Hindu according to Wikipedia.

I think the gang who raped to death that young woman on the bus were Hindu too.

Don’t know why people are so stupid.

Some Western (that includes Swiss) people forget that in many parts of the world, a woman is either (a) someone's woman or (b) anyone's woman. There is no category (c).

I understand where you're coming from, and you can rest assured that 99% of Freeper men would have put themselves at great risk to protect this woman had they been there.

BUT...while the rape of a woman touches the heartstrings of so many people, as it should, stating that "women are prey, everywhere" as if men aren't prey, too, is a bit off. Men, by far, receive the lion's share of violent attacks in this world, yet no one grieves for the plight of men. Case in point: there was a one-line throw-away blurb in the article about how the couple was beaten. How much do you want to bet that the women was slapped around a bit, but the husband was beaten to within an inch of his life? And the rape of men in prison is just a running joke in this country. "Oh, have fun with Bubba!" giggle giggle giggle.

One of the reasons that men are not given as much sympathy is that men are held accountable for their own choices, and are expected to take care of themselves. If, for example, a man makes the choice to go into a bad area inadequately armed, and he gets beaten or killed, other men say "He should have been prepared or he shouldn't have gone there." However, if we say the same sort of thing about a woman who did EXACTLY the same thing, suddenly it is "blaming the victim" or some other such emotional outburst.

Steubenville, Ohio, rape and India gang rape show India
isn’t so ‘backward’

Indian reaction to the New Delhi gang rape is in many ways more promising than American reactions to US rapes. Take the Steubenville, Ohio, case, which hasn’t generated the same public outrage as the case in India. Indian protesters’ calls for justice are a heartening sign of progress.

By Paul H. Robinson and Shyam Balganesh, The Christian Science Monnitor, Friday, March 15, 2013

Defense attorney Adam Nemann, his client, defendant Trent Mays, 17, and co-defendant 16-year-old Ma’lik Richmond listen to testimony during their trial on rape charges in juvenile court on March 14 in Steubenville, Ohio. Op-ed contributors Paul H. Robinson and Shyam Balganesh write: ‘Certainly the public outrage in [US rape cases] did not rival the mass protests in India’ in response to the December 2012 New Delhi gang rape. Keith Srakocic - AP

Philadelphia, Penn. - The December 2012 gang rape in New Delhi, India, deserves the public condemnation and outrage that it has brought. But much of the commentary on the case has gone beyond this, holding up the case as evidence of India’s larger flaws. The subtext writes India off as a backward and incorrigible third world country, whose primitive norms and lack of rule of law put it outside of modern democracies with more reliable norms and laws.

The unfortunate truth is that India’s reported rape rate, and even the slightly higher rate in New Delhi where the gang rape occurred, is less than that of typical European and American rates. In the days following the attack, scores of protests were held all over India but mostly in the New Delhi region where the attack occurred. Democracy went on the move, as thousands upon thousands of people joined in the calls for justice.

The Indian reaction to the incident is in many ways more gratifying and promising than reactions to American rape cases. Take the Steubenville, Ohio, case, which began trial on Wednesday. It has not generated nearly as much public outrage as the case in India. If there is a larger lesson that the gang rape and the public outcry that followed teach us about India, it is one of promise and hope, not alienation and despair.

But commentators have painted a different picture....

Police detained 13 men and questioned them

Aren't women advised to carry rape whistles in India for self protection?

There have been a couple of very high profile rape cases in India, recently. That has motivated the silent majority to take to the streets to protest, and put the legislature, the judiciary, and law enforcement to notice that they better change their attitudes get tough on this crime. After the bus rape, the politicians and the law enforcement barely got away by the skin of their teeth because emotions were running very high and large scale violence was seething beneath a very thin veneer of civil protests. It would not have been fun to be on the receiving end of the anger of millions of average indians.

As to the background of the rapists, sin is a human condition that is irrespective of where in the world you live. I personally suspect that an increase in the availability of pornography is to blame for more incidents of this nature.
