It actually wasn’t spelled wrong. You can spell the plural two ways, one is more commonly used today than the other; but in the past, the version he used was the more common way.

The word was not plural, it was singular, and the TEACHER spelled it wrong.

Since it is named after a proper name (Luis Braille), I am surprised that an alternate spelling has become acceptable.
