Wanted: People willing to die on Mars
CBC ^ | 3/16/13

Mars One co-founder tells CBC about its proposed one-way trip to the Red Planet

Mars One hopes to have people living on the planet — for the rest of their lives — by 2023.(Mars One/YouTube)

The man behind the private space project dubbed Mars One is looking for people to travel to Mars, but he's not offering a return ticket.

"The technology to get humans to Mars and keep them alive there exists," Bas Lansdorp told Day 6 host Brent Bambury in an interview that aired this week on CBC Radio.

"The technology to bring humans from Mars back to Earth simply does not exist yet."

Lansdorp said he's looking for people who are utterly dependable, good in groups and "at their best when things are at their worst."

The never-to-return explorers will require eight years of training, and the search starts this year.

The flight is scheduled to leave in Sept. 2022.

This is so sad.

Nobody really HAS to die on Mars.

If only they would get Ray-Gun control...

Arthur C. Clarke’s 1971 “Transit of Earth” is about a group of astronauts sent to observe the 1984 Transit of Earth viewed from Mars. The original party is 15, ten of whom will observe the transit from Mars’ moon, Phobos, and five or whom will observe it from the surface of Mars.

The Mars lander suffers a malfunction and the five astronauts on Mars are stranded without hope of return. There is only enough oxygen for one of the five to live long enough to see the transit and report back to earth. One lucky astronaut is selected to live to see the earth and moon transit the solar disk, before he expires from hypoxia and report the event back to earth.

This reminds me of the woman who won Prot’s writing contest and went to K-Pax.

I’ve actually read articles suggesting to send seniors. Their libido isn’t as problematic, and they aren’t at the same risk/consequences of radiation.

They can start the process of colonization of Mars. Objectively, it does make a fair bit of sense.

Interesting question. How would they pay us? Since the cost of getting supplies there would be astronomical (hehe), you'd probably be on strict rations and hungry all the time. SSN payments might come in the form of a few extra packets of freeze-dried peas every month, rather than a check or dollars, which you could then barter away for cigarettes, say??? I don't know, if life is going to be too spartan, they'll really have trouble getting volunteers, even old ones like me.

The knowledge exists but the machinery/equipment does not thus the technology doesn’t really exist. We know “how” in principle except the weather on Mars is more inhospitable than Earth but we haven’t designed or built a way to do it.

Sure, I’ll only be near 50. I’ll go in a heart beat. But I want some input into how I’ll live and what I’ll do when I get there.

It’s entirely possible to build cities underground on Mars. There are also places that wind and solar should be easier to generate in the canyon. Also, it will be possible to process Martian soil for fuel and products like glass. The soil will need terraforming, but bio-dome farms should be possible fairly quickly.

I don’t mind being a pioneer as long as I’m being a pioneer and not someone elses scientific sociology experiment.

I was going to say, like you, send Obama voters, Democrats, communists, etc. One way to rid Earth of its mental defectivies, but then the planner wanted people who were “utterly dependable, good in groups, and at their best when things were at their worst.”

That leaves out most Democrats and liberals, all marxists and communists, a good part of academia, much of the existing mainstream media (war correspondents from Iraq and Afghanistan excepted), and assorted extremists.

When was the last time that you can think of where liberals/Democrats were “utterly dependable” other than being “utterly depending” on the Govt for free goods and services (cheese, cellphones, rent, mortgage refinancing, 16 ounce sodas, etc).

They’d starve in a week. Why waste good MRE’s on them?

“Good in groups”? Yet, if you like one totalitarian leader and his sheeple, aided by a few soul-less lackies.

“Best when things are worst”. Oh gee, let’s see - Sequestration, unemployment between 7.7 and 9.0+ %, with underemployment at about 16%, not seeking employment about 7-9%, black kids selling drugs to survive instead of being in school to learn in order to get a job, taxes on businesses stifling them from expansion, thus making the job pool smaller for many up-coming youth, driving businesses out of the country because of taxes, a marxist “tax the evil rich” policy, one healthcare policy or you get fined or go to jail, etc.

Oh, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine, Syria, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, No. Korea, Red China, Russia, Hugo “I’m still dead” Chavez and his communist support activities for other reds in Latin America (Uruguay, Argentina, Boliva, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador and Nicaragua, and a bloody drug war in Mexico.

Also “Fast and Furious”, “What difference does it make?”, “Just a bump in the road” (4 dead Americans), Black Panther Party intimidation of voters, black crime out of control esp. against other blacks, illiteracy on the rise, teenage pregnancy on the rise, drug use on the rise, violent crime in general on the rise, etc.

On second thought, Mars is called “The Red Planet”. Yeah, let’s send the leftist bastards up there by the millions, then, to quote from one of my favorite movies, “Alien”, “Let’s go into orbit and nuke the place”.

Yes! We have winner. Build them rockets now and make them large. Got to lighten Earth’s heavy load. Just doing God’s work since we don’t have the Black Plague anymore, just a Red plague.

I’m feeling really magnanimous tonight. Free rides for all lefties and free peanuts as well.

Bon Voyage. You can “Serve Mankind” by your leaving.

How does this really differ from the earliest settler in the “New World?” They took a huge risk and most never returned to their European home land.

#39 re ability to leave Mars. Haven’t you seen the Movies “Mission to Mars” (I think it had Michael Madsen and Val Kilmer and Cary Ann Moss, and another like it with Don Cheadle who does leave Mars by other means?

Seriously, due to Mars lighter gravity, space ships could be assembled from parts shipments on the planet, fuel added, and Voila, you’re homeward bound, not that we would want any Martian Marxists coming back to wreck earth a second time.

There is a huge, yawning gulf between the physical possible and available technology.

Regardless, Hollywood notwithstanding, the economic hurdles are enormous.
