Got this for $350 when taxes are included. Has Windows 8. I have not opened the box yet and will wait until Sunday to see if there isn't some thing better out there at Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot etc...

So what do freepers think of this model? The CPU comes in at above 2100 on CPU benchmark site and I will be adding 4gb memory soon to make 8gb. This cpu is Ivy Bridge which is the latest

Counter intuitive is right. Did you figure out how to turn off the computer yet? Windows 8 doesn’t make it obvious at all. I had to go look for the way to do it on Google.

Oh yes, the AC adapter went out after a year. Bought a third party replacement which has been holding out. Otherwise, solid build.

Buy a spare pc with Windows 7 now. Wish I’d done so but got seduced by the introductory price of a laptop with 8.

Unless you’re into spending many days exploring 8, researching the alterations and customizing it, get a 7.

I’ve had an 8 for around 4 months now, still see not one single thing about it that I like better than the 7.

I had to go to Help go turn the thing off. I went to mail and it seemed like it locked up. They don’t want you to go back if you click on the wrong screen. Bookmarks is gone. I downloaded fire fox to try to bring it back but they don’t want me to use it either. Free Cell is gone. I could click on bookmarks then Free Republic and be there but not anymore. I think I need to find the right tool bar. They sure like cluttered screens.

Progress: Bigger and better mistakes.

I think we must have both bought the discontinued (at the time) Satellites, does yours have a fingerprint scanner? I
swear these machines were made to withstand combat conditions.
They might *not* ever die.

I am still using my Satellite that I bought in Slovakia
around 2004.
The CD has gone out, but my main problem is that it takes forever to boot and the HD runs much more then it should.
None of the normal maintenance functions, such as defrag, are of any help. If anyone has an idea, I am open to suggestions.
I might add, the Satellite will crash in a warm environment without an external fan.
Mine is elevated, with a five inch muffin fan blowing under and over.

Last year I bought a newer Satellite from a distressed expat, but my wife and 2 yr old baby monopolize it.
I also have a Dell laptop that another expat hocked to me.
He is back in the US and it is questionable if he will be able to return here. (Philippines)

Low end system all around. Save your money and don’t add memory. You can’t use more than 4 Mb unless you upgrade to 64-bit OS.

As best you can, try not to bend the cable near the plug, or jostle the area too much, but that's probably sound advice for any laptop, not just Toshiba.

I am very careful with that connector and remind people, family, friends all the time. I hear Apple has a flexible plug there that cannot kill the motherboard socket. That's a great idea. Freeper Swordmaker told me about this. But there are so many generic AC power adapters for PC laptops there is no discipline. Ebay is the best place to buy replacement AC power adaptors for laptops

The weak point seemed to be the AC adapter port.

That was exactly what happened to my Toshiba. It ended up a doorstop because of that silly AC port. But that was a great computer, with a speaker and sound quality.

Yep - has the fingerprint scanner.

I keep telling myself that one of these days I’m going to figure out how to use that scanner thingy!

I just bought a 500gb Dell running Windows 7 to replace my old 50gb Windows XP.

My computer guys said, “Don’t get 8, get 7!” Windows 8, so it is said, was designed to function on touch screen tablets, not cnventional PCs. There is even an app to make Windows 8 mimic the regular desktop start menu and icons on Windows 7, because 8 on a PC is so un-user-friendly.

But MS won’t let retailers sell any more Windows 7 products, they now have to stock and sell WIndows 8, like it or not. So if you are buying at a bigbox store off the shelf, you are pretty much stuck with 8.

But Dell will still sell new Windows 7 machines, at least for a while, and that’s what I just purchased and had shipped to my house. Even got a great price, since it’s “only” 500gb, and “last years’s model.” But the Office that is installed is the 2013 version. Go figure. Just set it up today.

“Buy a spare pc with Windows 7 now.”

Good advice. I read on FR that they will be stopping support for XP this year(?). Although I wonder if XP is so old - will the the hackers still be trying to get onto those systems. And isn’t that why I have additional virus protection?

It’s getting to the point where I am having a harder and harder time adapting to new software!

As long as this is not a Windows 8 system, sounds like you are good to go.

Toshiba makes a good laptop. Actually works better for $350-400 bucks than the $1,200 I paid for a much higher end laptop that conked out on me several times, with the same problems.

The only problem is that they don’t have a video card that would support gaming. I can only play old games, maybe those around 2009 being at the absolute limit. Nothing new can work, even if it looks simple.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L555 that I bought in early 2010 – bought it at B.J.’s Warehouse club for around $400. Sweet machine, runs well, love the 17” HD LED backlit monitor and the extended key board. And this is my second Toshiba Satellite. I loved that one too, ran it for about 4 years and beat the crap out of it when I was doing consulting work and schlepped it back and forth from Baltimore to Annapolis every day.

I had an HP laptop once – hated it.
