A majority of physicians see a somewhat bleak future for medicine, pointing to eroding independence and shrinking income, reports everydayhealth.com.
According to a survey from the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions of more than 600 doctors, six in 10 physicians said they expect many of their colleagues to retire earlier than planned in the next 1 to 3 years.
That perception cuts across age, gender and specialty.
Another 55 percent of doctors surveyed believe many of their colleagues will cut back on their hours because of the way medicine is changing, although the survey didn't delineate on how it was changing.
Seventy-five percent believe the best and brightest may not consider a career in medicine, an increase from the 2011 survey result of 69 percent.
“Physicians recognize ‘the new normal’ will necessitate major changes in the profession that require them to practice in different settings as part of a larger organization that uses technologies and team-based models for consumer (patient) care,” the survey's findings stated.
Approximately two-thirds of those surveyed said they believe physicians and hospitals will work together more closely in coming years.
Results found that in the last 2 years, 31 percent moved into a larger practice.
Nearly eight in 10 believe midlevel providers will play a larger role in directing primary care.
Four in 10 doctors reported their take-home pay decreased from 2011 to 2012, with more than half said their pay cut was 10 percent or less, according to the survey.
Among physicians reporting a pay cut, four in 10 blame Obamacare and 48 percent of all doctors believed their income would drop again in 2013 as a result of the health reform law.

Every year sliced off life expectancy is a HUGE boost for SocSec and Medicare.
It’s the budget fix that no politician will ever mention.
In a few years we won’t even get midlevels.

It turns out that this guy works for a company hired by the hospital to monitor billing compliance with Medicare etc. He clearly had little understanding of what he was talking about medically, and for all I know he wasn't a physician, but he was making critical decisions about the care of a patient that I did a life-threatening procedure on. If that patient were to have a complication after I sent him home, it would be on me, and I would be the one who could get sued. More to the point, I feel responsible for this guy's well being, because I'm the one who worked on him.
The bottom line? I have honestly lost all enthusiasm for practicing medicine and being a doctor. If I could swing it I would be looking to run a farm somewhere. I know that's a headache too, but I'm used to not sleeping, sometimes for days, and I'm pretty sure I have a sufficient work ethic.
In the meantime, some lazy jug-earred narcissist gets accolades from Hollywood and from the MSM, while he personally takes apart the greatest nation that has ever existed on the face of the Earth.
Demoralized doesn't even begin to describe how I feel.
I hope there’s at least one left to write me scripts.
I have a good friend who is an M D internist. She makes 110k per year, is on call a lot and is generally working her ass off. Doesn’t seem worth it to me, I have a BBA and work less and earn more than she.
My last GP retired about the time Obamacare was being forced through Congress. He had already complained to me that his wife, who was a PA in his practice, was consumed with doing paperwork instead of practicing medicine. I bet he’s he’s glad he quit this impending ugly mess.
It is starting...and I don’t blame them. Doctors should leave practice and “early retire” if society won’t give them professional freedom to do what is medically correct. I believe people must suffer the consequences of continuing to elect (and reelect) the type of LIB and RINO human-loser politicians who force this federal garbage law on us (aka nobamacare). Only through suffering is there a CHANCE people might awaken to the error of their ways. In the meantime, good luck...suckers. Don’t be surprised if most remaining doctors stop accepting “new” patients.

The US will become emergency based only and strictly for those who are penniless and have no where else to go.

My GP takes 3 months to get an appt. with, so I see the NP if I need something sooner...and that even includes visits, post hospitalization, where you are directed to see your GP in a week...no GP, just the NP.
I go to a University Medical Center because I have MS. Waited for the appt. for the MS Specialist for 6 months, because that's how long a backup there was., I saw him for the first appt., I've never seen him again. My 4 month check ups are done by his NP or PA.
Yep same here. My doctor has a sign that says “If you have waited more than 15 minutes past your appointment time see the clerk.” I’ve modified it to say, “If your wait is less than 45 minutes past your appointment time you must have show up late and you may be assessed a late fee.”
My Internist said that he was considering early retirement because of the increased time and paperwork from frequent changes the insurance and pharmaceutical companies keep making.
When Obamacare more fully kicks in next year, he may have more reason to close up shop.

Maybe this administration can use the idle postal workers to fill in the doc shortage.
My doctor retired the first of this year because of this. Luckily I was able to get another doctor in the group.
I see some something similar occurring in medicine sooner or later to go around this mess, assuming obamacare can't/won't be undone.
Most in the health care fields choose them because these fields satisfy and fulfill them such that it truly isn't just about the money.
They'll find a way to do what is their nature, what is beyond what simply comes from education and training.
But...considering what caregivers at all levels do for us and those we love, why on earth would you not want to pay them above and beyond simple monetary compensation?
Treating caregivers poorly is not just bad manners, it's very bad for the karma. And we're talking about "instant" karma here, the least forgiving and the kind most likely to hit back the hardest with all the focus of a hand grenade.
Look around you. Borders, elections, education, our money and financial systems, privacy, etc. We are being taken down, a bit at a time so we don't jump out of the pot, by those who have studied us and human nature and our form of government. And not a shot fired.
Masterful, really...people should take notice and appreciate the artistry of what's been done to us.
Many who are too young to retire are starting or joining practices that do no accept insurance ... any kind including Medicare, Medicaid, private, etc. Cash, check or charge card and you file any paperwork to get re-reimbursed.
TSA type of applicants will no doubt increase at an exponential rate, right up their ally (leftists that is). Kind of reminds me of Mao’s mentality of turning doctors into farmers and farmers into doctor’s as quickly as the order could be given.
