Is Pope Francis the final pope?
Examiner ^

St. Malachy, an Irish archbishop born in 1094, reportedly was summoned to Rome by Pope Innocent II. While there, tradition holds that he had a vision in which details were revealed to him about all of the future popes. After he wrote the vision and gave it to the Pope, his document was filed in the Catholic Church archives and was left forgotten until it was discovered by Arnold de Wyon, a Benedictine historian, in 1590. In 1595, de Wyon published St. Malachy's vision in his Lignum Vitae.

Malachy’s prophecy is considered by the church to be a hoax.

No and DOUBLE NO! When are they going to give up on this? Every scholar that’s looked at this notes that 1) its written by two, possibly 3 different people, 2) it was “discovered” (resurrected and redacted) as a political ploy to boost the chances of one particular person being elected Pope and 3) the verses about Petrus Romanus are an obvious “add on”.

I give up!

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio's parents were from Rome. Furthermore, his papal name was chosen after Saint Francis of Assisi. Francis of Assisi was born Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone and Pietro means Peter. So, one could argue that Pope Francis is Peter the Roman.

It is curious.

Does it really matter who the pope is? When that time comes, it will not be of any concern. Do you know Christ as your personal savior? That is all that will matter.

I don’t blame people who just want everything to END, somehow ... living every day can be really hard.

No and no...

If you want to know what to watch for read St. Hildegard’s prophecy...

When the great ruler (the Great Monarch who is to rule Europe after the collapse of Communism) exterminates the Turks almost entirely, one of the remaining Mohammadans will be converted, become a priest bishop and cardinal, and when the new pope is elected (immediately before Antichrist) this cardinal will kill the pope before he is crowned, through jealousy, wishing to be pope himself; then when the other cardinals elect the next pope, this cardinal will proclaim himself Anti-pope, and two-thirds of the Christians will go with him. He, as well as Anti-christ, are descendants of the tribe of Dan.

An unchaste woman will conceive an unchaste son. The wicked serpent who deceived Adam will influence this child in such as way that nothing good or virtuous will enter him; nor under the circumstances will it even be possible for any good to be in him

The mark (of Antichrist) will be a hellish symbol of Baptism, because thereby a person will be stamped as an adherent of Antichrist and also of the Devil in that he thereby gives himself over to the influence of Satan. Whoever will not have this mark of Antichrist can neither buy nor sell anything and will be beheaded.

Much more of Obama’s gormless and feckless foreign policy, Moslem intransigence, Iranian/North Korean brinkmanship, and Russian and/or Chinese belligerence, and we may ALL be viewing the ruins of the Vatican through a radioactive haze - those of us left alive, anyway.

It is curious.

It is not any more curious than the Birthday Paradox:

In a room of just 23 people there’s a 50-50 chance of two people having the same birthday. In a room of 75 there’s a 99.9% chance of two people matching.

Humans do not naturally perceive math. That's why such paradoxes are so counter-intuitive.

I have two children (out of ten) with the same birthday, eight years apart.

I agree about not naturally perceiving math ;-).

So wrong, I don’t know where to begin!

Cardinal Bergoglio’s parents are NOT from Rome.
His father was born in Portacomaro, in Piedmont, a region of Italy that is not only NOT Rome, they didn’t even speak ITALIAN!
His mother was born in Genoa.

Francis of Assissi was NOT Born Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone. He was born Giovani di Bernardone. “Francesco” was a nickname, and “di Pietro” means HIS FATHER was named Pietro. NOT HIM.

Now, you can’t have it both ways. Saint Francis CHANGED his name. Pope Francis is named FRANCIS, after Saint Francis’s NEW name. If Cdl. Bergoglio was naming himself Pope Giovani, maybe it would make sense that Giovani di Pietro di Bernadone. No, wait, it would still be incredibly stupid, because it would be Pope Giovani, not Pope Pietro.

So Pope Francis is NOT named Pope Pietro. He’s not even named after someone who had Pietro as a middle name. And he’s actually the very first pope from outside of anywhere Rome ever ruled (although Rome’s presence in Poland is a little suqishy.) In fact, if you wanted to make a prophecy predicting Pope Francis, you’d probably name him Pope Francis the Not Roman.

Oh, I’m sure the prophecy can be interpreted to cover Pope Francis (or Pope George ;-) the Argentine. Why, there are lots of people named Pedro in Argentina, lots!

Don’t worry. “(the Great Monarch who is to rule Europe after the collapse of Communism)” is a gloss. Nothing says the great ruler will be a king, or even Catholic.

Is Pope Francis the final pope?

I heard someone the other day speculate that, because of the punctuation in the prophecy, there could be a gap. So you get Benedict, then a gap of uncertain length, then Petro Romano.

This was from a dispensationalist, of course.

When a new pope is elected—this “prophecy” will be done—just as the infamous Cornstalk Curse on every president elected with a “0” in the year would die in office. Ronald Reagan beat that one (but he was shot and didn’t die). No one talks about that one anymore.
