On May 28, 2008, Adam LeWinter and Director Jeff Orlowski filmed a historic breakup at the Ilulissat Glacier in Western Greenland . The calving event lasted for 75 minutes and the glacier retreated a full mile across a calving face three miles wide. The height of the ice is about 3,000 feet, 300-400 feet above water and the rest below water.

He had to ruin it in the end and blame global warming.

But the last 10 seconds of global warming B.S. at the end of the video just spoiled the amazing fun of watching it.

You’d be toast schlepping across that on a pair of snow shows when that thing popped.

I imagine that the full film talked about man made global warming, but the film clip just stated the facts.

Wow! That puts films of ice breaking up on Alaskan rivers to shame.

Amazing video. We know it’s enormous, but it is sooo big that there is no way to get any perspective from the camera..no reference point. It could be 100 ft long, or 1,000 feet, or 1 mile long..

Yup. I wish they’d just stuck to the d*mn facts of the calving and left editorializing out.

The real logic of it is that the level of ice backing up that glacier and moving it outward so such a huge calving can occur indicates the opposite of global warming. Nothing in nature is static and there is no "ideal" temperature. Nature does not give a s*** about whether we exhale a bit more this year as opposed to last. She will handle it in stride and the plant life, if it could, would thank us for the extra breathable gas.

In the last 15,000 year Florida has been underwater and twice its present size. I love to ask global warming fanatics what is the “correct” sea level for Florida.

Won't be too long before I'll be picking some wild blackberries in the woods behind my house. I consider that a pretty fine expression of gratitude on their behalf :-)

Just the kind of an event you would expect to see during the tail end of an interglacial. The good news is that they cannot grow as fast as they can collapse.

Alaskan glaciers do that on a much smaller scale (obviously). They will be pretty much stable for years, then suddenly begin to break off and calve, and retreat miles back. It’s called “surging,” and it’s normal. It also happens in cold years, when no globes are warming.

I agree...

They describe this as awesome and horrible at the same time; as if nothing's ever going to change out there.

It's an amazing piece of film.

I remember as kids we used to go down to the Milwaukee River and watch the ice break up and float down stream during the spring. We'd sit there all afternoon, munching on peanut butter and banana sandwiches, happy as clams seeing this natural spectacle. (This was back in the early sixties...)

Damn that global warming! (And all along I thought it was caused by the British Invasion.)
