Fears missing dogs are victims of 'ritual execution'

Fears have been raised over the mysterious disappearance of around 30 dogs in southern Idaho after a missing German shepherd was found with its head crushed in a suspected ritual killing.

Animal control officials raised the alarm after dogs of various sizes, breeds and ages mysteriously began to vanish.

'The dogs seem to vanish into thin air,' said Debbie Blackwood, director of the animal shelter in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Officials say some 30 dogs have gone missing in recent months in Twin Falls and nearby communities in an agricultural region in south-central Idaho known as the Magic Valley.

A man and his young daughter hiking along the north rim of the Snake River Canyon northeast of Twin Falls earlier this month discovered the remains of a German shepherd that had apparently been stoned to death, Blackwood said.

The dog, found in an area known as the Devil's Corral in neighboring Jerome County, appeared to have suffered a 'ritualistic execution' in which its head was crushed with rock and its carcass covered with a purple cloth, she said.

The case has prompted the Humane Society of the United States to offer a $5,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the dog's death.

Maybe, but Idaho is anything but “diverse”.

In the agricultural areas, it most certainly is. Lots of "migrant" workers from south of the U.S. border. There are areas so bad in some towns/counties, that the EMTs won't venture into them without police backup.

It got worse there in the 80s/90s when they forced new labor laws about kids working farms into effect. I worked the fields topping corn in the early 80s - made good money for a punk pre-teen.

I have always wanted a Great Pyrenees! the biggest dog I have ever had was a Rhodesian Ridgeback at his heaviest weight (muscle not fat) was about 135. He was gentle and protective, great dog!

In the South its no ritualistic killing, its dog fighters using pet dogs that have been dog-napped to train killer pit bulls. The diverse neighborhoods are notorious for this.

Not just the South. This is a problem in South Bend ,IN. also.

This is the country. Unfortunately they weren’t close enough to see tag identification.

I think about that dog every time I garden.

I just “binged” images of the RR breed and what a beautiful dog! I’ve been considering adding a dog to my security plan and I thank you for mentioning this breed. It looks like it just might be the perfect choice for me.

Would one of those be OK in a small house with a small yard? I wouldn’t want to bring any dog into my home and end up with that choice leading to a frustrated pal....My last dog was a lab and she was happy just hanging with me.

You can have a large breed dog in a small apartment. But consider if you have time to give it the necessary outdoor exercise and walks every day.

If that’s too much a breed like a chihuhua or a French bulldog would be happy being indoors and won’t make too many demands on your time. Or better still, get a dog-like cat.

I’m a bit ahead of the apartment game. ;-). I have a smallish house on a small, fenced in yard, so I’m think I can avoid settling for a cat.
