Did you know that consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in the U.S. -- which can be found in a plethora of cookies, candies and fast-foods -- has increased by a a whopping 10,673 percent between 1970 and 2005? So reports the USDA Dietary Assessment of Major Trends in U.S. Food Consumption report.

Are you one of millions, who, according to the USDA report, consume one-quarter of your calories from added sugars, most of which comes from high fructose corn syrup, as mercola.com pointed out?

Meanwhile, have you heard about the a recent study, which reveals that a diet high in high fructose corn syrup may be partly to blame for insulin resistance?

And did you learn here on the Sugar Shock Blog about the health-harming mercury that's been found recently in foods containing high fructose corn syrup?

What's more, are you aware that in the past decade, as people's consumption of HFCS has soared unabated, diabetes has increased by a staggering 90 percent and 8 percent or 24 million Americans now have diabetes?

I will say actual Suger in a Soft Drink is far Superior to Corn Syrup.

But they use it because it is alot cheaper.

Agree on all counts!

The article begs the question "what other sweeteners were in use in 1970, and what happened to their consumption levels between 1970 and 2005?"

Corn does grow in a lot of places that sugar can’t grow. Odd thing is that throwback soda (real sugar) is the same price as corn syrup based soda.

It is cheaper because of sugar subsidies to the U.S. Sugar Industry that restricts imports and drives up the price.

Cutting the use of corn syrup is another kick in the crotch for our farmers.

I have never given much thought to the use and consumption of HFCS but someone posted an article on FB today so I looked some information up. It is strange how much diabetes has increased. A connection? I have no idea.

A Very Good Point!

I’m sorry this is just too much like a “scary story”.

Ooh, there is measurable Mercury!!!! Of course, they don’t say how much. They can measure extremely minute things in the parts per trillion for some things.

Please, everyone, listen to me! Stop eating anything because it WILL kill you, just look at the people who have gone before us, they ate and they died.

I think their is a Connection, but you think about how much time we no longer spend outside etc etc.

That is a factor too.

I’m just curious about the increase in diabetes. Know quite a few people with it and it is nasty. One woman I know has lost a leg, another woman lost both legs and is going blind. I would think anyone would be interested to know if there is a connection.

I think a lot of it is just plain inactivity leading to weight gain.
Kids (and of course adults) today are sitting in front of electronic screens instead of playing (working) outdoors.

But what about adults? Why the huge increase in diabetes now? I want to know if it is caused by high fructose corn syrup or something else or it just happens. It is a horrible disease and if we can prevent it, why wouldn’t we want to? If there is no connection, then that’s great. Would just like some honest answers.

Once you eliminate HFCS from your diet, you automatically have improved the quality level of your food intake.

Good quality food does not have HFCS as an ingredient.

Next thing to eliminate is partially hydrogenated soybean oil.

IMO its a combination of factors. Lack of exercise and high sugar diets are probably two of the main causes.

Corn Syrup: Corn syrup is extracted from corn starch and is made into glucose. Some recipes call for corn syrup as a sweetener and it is sold in grocery stores, often under the brand name Karo.

High-Fructose Corn Syrup: HFCS goes through additional processing. Three different types of enzymes are added, one after the other, to change the corn starch into first glucose and then into fructose. Additional glucose is then added to THAT to finally create high-fructose corn syrup.

Corn Sugar: Just a new name for High-Fructose Corn Syrup that the Corn Refiner’s Association is trying to get the FDA to approve for food labeling.

So, hopefully not TOO confusing. Corn Syrup – syrup which has undergone an extraction process from corn starch. High-Fructose Corn Syrup – syrup which has been extracted from corn starch, then processed again to turn it into fructose, then has the final whammy of adding yet more glucose to it. Corn Sugar – just another name for HFCS!

It’s all very confusing to me.

Inactivity has got to be a factor as well. But although I’m wary of drawing causation from correlational observations, HFCS has to be the leading potential cause of the increase in diabetes from all the chemical candidates you could come up with.

Why doesn’t someone come out with a soda containing only 25% of the sugar (without any other sweeteners).I bet people would adjust just like they do with non-fat milk.
