Man lucky to escape with his life after provoking one-ton bison into ramming him against fence
UK Daily Mail ^ | March 29, 2013 | Anthony Bond

They are pictures which show exactly why it isn't wise to taunt animals which are much larger and more powerful that you.

When this enormous one-ton bison was going about its daily basis in Antelope Island State Park in Utah, a rather foolish man decided it would be a good idea to provoke it.

That’s funny... he denied provoking the animal.

He walked away. Which means that the Bison had more of a conscience than he did.

These animals are massive. The Mrs. and I drove through the northern unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park as newlyweds. I had enough respect for them that if they decided to block the road, we just waited for them to move. I could have reached out of the car window and touched them, they were that close. But we had the sense not to do so. Eventually, they moved and we continued on our way. It was the best live close-up I'd ever gotten in my life and we got out without a scratch simply because I'd been trained to handle the situation just in case.

Mrs. Vigilanteman was more fascinated than scared. Bison may not be the brightest member of the animal kingdom, but they can definitely sense fear or danger.

Bison can be very aggressive. A friend who grew up in S. Dakota saw one pulverize a VW once.

Last week in Utah, man dies swinging from a giant rock arch. This week in Utah, man almost killed by charging bison. Outdoor mishaps, many fatal, seem to be a never-ending source of twisted entertainment on the local news in this state. I’m guessing we are averaging about 3 incidents per month for the entire 15 years I’ve lived here.

Bison are massive. I saw one in Yellowstone a few years ago.

I'd say it was the flexibility of the chain-link fence that saved his life. Had that been a concrete wall his eptitaph would have included the word "splat".

Guys who tease and taunt bisons get what they deserve. He’s lucky to be alive.

Watching his death could be ‘performance art’ and he could get an NEA grant.

“Art.”

My wife and I have had that experience several times out west mostly in Custer State Park in the Black Hills. You stop your car, and just let these massive beasts pass on by.

Met a lady 2 years ago who lives on a farm in Columbiana, AL, with her husband. She said they had 1 of only 2 farms in AL which raise buffalo. They had a 30+ head herd. She said that whenever 1 demonstrated aggressiveness against any human, they had to eat it.

Utah has a million beautiful, awesome, picturesque, majestic ways to kill you. Millions of people travel around the world to see the sites; every year there are a few that don’t return home.

Like the German mountain bikers they found a couple years later, who had discovered that there are deep slot canyons near Moab. Achtung indeed.

That is rural common sense. Now propose putting down a dog that has demonstrated this and you will get a much different response here.
