'David Tennant and Billie Piper will appear in the 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who, the BBC has confirmed.

Tennant was the 10th Doctor and Piper played his on-screen companion Rose Tyler in the BBC One show.

Filming on the show, which will also star John Hurt, will start next week.

Tennant's successor, Matt Smith - also in the special with his new assistant played by Jenna-Louise Coleman - says fans "will not be disappointed" by the 3D show, due to air on 23 November.'

I've read that David Morrisey who plays the governor on the Walking Dead has an interest in playing the Doctor when Matt Smith moves on.

Morrisey already played a man who believed he was the doctor on the Christmas special a few years back.

He’d be a great doctor, I think they’d probably go for someone else though. A recent poll in the UK found ‘Sherlock’ star Benedict Cumberbatch to be the public favourite to be the next.

I really like Matt Smith in the the role. I liked Tennant too but Smith plays a perfectly erratic character. I’m watching an old episode now when he’s returned to visit Craig and “Stormageddon” the baby.

I’m so behind on this show, I dont even remember who the Doctor is right now.

I’m somewhere way back there with Rose and Martha Jones. Better fire up the Netflix.

I believe "the rules" apply to Billie Piper as well!

I really liked him myself. They did a sort of similar thing with Romana II in the classic series.

Unfortunately I don’t think its possible for Amy Pond to return since she and Rory died in the 1930s.

BC would be PERFECT! But I doubt the show’s budget could afford him. Plus I read he still intends to do Sherlock even after Star Trek II. Both Cumberbatch and Morrisey have such a broad range of acting skills (good guy to villain), either one would make the 12th Doctor (potentially the Valeyard) an incredible character.

I still wish they would bring Paul McGann back for a special. His work on Big Finish as the 8th Doctor is incredible. I mean, really incredible.

David Morrisey is The Galaxy Quest of Doctor Who.

He was fantastic in all his cheeky, bombastic, scene-chewing glory!

I've heard that he was there choice before Tennant, which was the reason Tennant commented to Rose, "I'm never ginger. I wanted to be a ginger." Smith also checked his hair and made a ginger comment.

I still think Peri is hotter than the new ones. I like the nu who, but the “90210” stuff bothers me.

It was more like the 1980s.

And for that matter Clara Oswin Oswald died in the 1890s
