So far I have read 5,000 + pages.

At least that was the first time. When I got to then end of the 5th book, I was sad that I didn’t have another good book to read.

So I started again and am halfway through book 2.

Damn good stuff!

I think they filmed some of the winter scenes in Iceland.

My brother in law played the first episode for me. He described it as World of Warcraft meets the Sopranos.

Yes for season 3 anyway they filmed all the “Beyond the Wall” scenes in Iceland. AT&T had a “making of season 3” special on today. Really good.

I got thru the first two books and then gave up.

To my mind the characters were all too amoral. The only decent honorable man in the whole story was killed off in the first book, and the only one who was sort of honorable was the dwarf. I read these much more than a decade ago, I think, so my memory of names is off.

What bothered me about the books was that there was no recognition of the fact that honor and a reputation for fair dealing was of immense value in a society based on personal relationships and loyalty. A leader who was not seen as honorable by his men found it much more difficult to keep their loyalty, which was absolutely essential to his staying in power. Even Machiavelli knew that, though to his mind the idea was to get a reputation for honor to help you get into a position where you could betray everybody who trusted you and seize absolute power.

I realize the real medieval times were rife with betrayal and double-dealing, as are all times, but there were also many accounts of those who remained loyal and honorable to death. Don’t remember any of those from the books.

Rant off.

Let me get this straight...you’re watching an incredibly violent, bloody show and you’re complaining about sex?

Apparently I’m the only person here who finds violence more objectionable than sex. Sex in tv and movies is awkward to watch because, come on, it’s not normally a spectator sport. But sex is at least a normal, acceptable (mostly) human behavior. Violence? Murder? No. Not normal. Not acceptable.

I have read the books but never seen the show - where are they at in terms of the books?

You gave up too soon.

Men that don’t know honor can learn honor.

People do not always finish in the same position in which they started.

Some rise, others fall.

They are roughly at the start of A Storm of Swords.

Like I said I hadn’t gotten that far into it. Sounds like the violence would have turned me off too.

Yes sex is an everyday occurrence but not to the degree that Hollywood portrays it. Thrones is just too crass for my taste.

it’d be a lot better without the nudity, it detracts from the story.

Have you read the books? Seems like the shows are simply following the stories.

They changed some things but I am referring to what they are showing, not the storyline. It’s HOW it is presented I have the problem with.

Right. I am not saying they can’t have their prostitutes and such, but the way they are showing it is horrible. It doesn’t add anything and it distracts from the story.

No complaining abut sex, the complaints are about how it is being presented

Violence has been a fact throughout human history. You can bet that before they started keeping records it was far worse.

Yep it’s the start of book three ...I don’t mind the sex. They pretty much focus on the woman and the chicks are pretty hot.
Something tells me the writer is a co conservative....everyone is doing their own thing while existential threats are on the horizon. Sound familiar?

Yes, it sounds like humans as were are today and possibly have always been.

I’m fairly certain that George Martin is a liberal, but I am not certain of that.

Whatever his politics are, he is one of the best writers that I have ever read in terms making exceptionally deep characters that compel me to care about them.

Humans desire power over other humans, and they conspire and plot to get it, and once they have it they are further corrupted and consumed by it. Meanwhile others see this and move in the other direction, but do they always survive even being honorable? No.

I feel like reading this man’s book has enriched my life in a number of ways.
