The Walking Dead comes to a surprising conclusion in Sunday nights Season 3 finale. [Spoiler warning.]...I wont lie: I was hoping for the big, dramatic showdown between Rick and the Governor. Instead, The Walking Deads Season 3 finale ended on a mixed note, part tragic and part hopeful.
As a season finale, Im not sure this works. The last five or six episodes of the show have been all about rising tension. The drama, the stakes of the game, the whole arms race between Woodbury and the prison, all of it has built up to a breaking point, spilling over last week with Merles suicide run against the Governor and his men.
The problem with the Season 3 finale is two-fold: First, Merles sacrifice is rendered pointless now that the Governor has gone and killed off basically his own entire army.
Second, none of the massive amount of tension thats built up over the course of the season has been released or resolved...........
But what we have instead is a conscious decision to carry the existing conflict between the Governor and the prison forward. Why? For lack of a better villain? To flesh out the dwindling ranks of the survivors with a busload of new characters? New extras to feed to the walkers?
None of these questions result in satisfying answers. Fundamentally, this is a business decision, and sometimes business decisions are terrible for creative endeavors.
Many moments in this episode were great. The opening scene between the Governor and Milton, especially. Carls internal conflict and anger over Ricks betrayal of Michonne........"

I think it was left purposely ambiguous whether the Woodbury kid was going to drop his gun or not, but there is no doubt Carl shot him because he was pissed that his own father hadn’t done enough to keep the group safe, and he wasn’t going to make the same mistake. I have quibbles with other parts of the finale—instead of using flash bangs to confuse the attackers, why didn’t the prison defenders just blow the hell out of them with real grenades—but the Carl situation sets up great conflict for next season.
Carl was angry that he was not part of the assault team - his commentary later had the feel of an after-the-fact justification for acting like a sulky 12-year-old.
Where’d the governor get a Steyr AUG? Have any of y’all ever handled one? I’ve only seen one once, and didn’t get a chance to hold it.
I would look at the prison as a place to begin rebuilding. I wouldn’t totally walk away from Woodbury either. Woodbury is already fortified and makes a natural place to expand to as the population grows.
My wife hated the Andrea character because her hair was always too perfect, her roots were not gray like all the other women, she was always wearing clean new clothes and she even had a pedicure last night.
Also, too much talking with Milton when she should have been picking up the pliers.
The bus load of Woodbury folks will be killed off one at a time probably over the course of next season.
The whole scene silly. Like a pair of pliers could break through the hardened steel of the chain on handcuffs.
It would have been much more interesting if he had left a hack saw.
You did, which raises interesting questions. Was that a technical error? Or was another gun involved and why?
I know some people who know some people on the show. Apparently the actors didn't like the way the finale was originally written and basically staged a revolt that got the show runner fired. They more or less dictated what this episode was going to be. Also, a great deal of "who lives and who dies" is dictated by AMC corporate.
Walking Dead ping!
Please let me know if you would like on or off The Walking Dead ping list. Thanks for the ping, virgil283.
That was my guess.
"I can talk my way out of anything!" Typical lawyer. Good riddance, Andrea.
HALF Agreed. While the Governor's 'troops' were not, as he even observed, 'battle tested', a rout of this magnitude wasn't realistic. Plus, from the tombs to the outside in one easy door? I thought the tombs were DIFFICULT to get to.
I will take issue with the problem with the speed of the Governor snapping and killing pretty much everyone. That is in keeping with the TV Governors mercurial and unbalanced nature. My only complaint is that they left the shots showing the massacre largely unseen. All this money and NOW they skimp on squibs and bloodbags???
Well Andrea was a civil rights attorney.
I like Carol, she started weak but became strong.
I’m with you about Carol. I also like how Maggie became a badass, too. Even Beth got in a kill shot last night.
The ladies are coming into their own.
I love the walking dead chicks, and I would hit each and every one of them (waiting for a year or so on Beth so she can be of-age).
