An ancient cave known as the 'gate to hell' in Greco-Roman mythology has reportedly been discovered in southwestern Turkey.

The ruins of the "gate to hell," an ancient cave to the underworld in Greco-Roman mythology, have been discovered in Turkey, Italian archaeologists have announced.

The cave, also known as Pluto's Gate, was uncovered in the ancient Phrygian city of Hierapolis, now known as the city of Pamukkale, in southwestern Turkey.

Another place to go check out the next time I’m in Turkey. Along with Göbekli Tepi and Çatalhöyük. There’s a lot of fascinating stuff there, but sadly, a lot of tourists never venture out of Istanbul.

Troy is awesome.

So that’s how the Muslims got up here. Someone left the gate open.

It is, very much so. I’ve been there three times in the past, most recently in early 2010, and always had an enjoyable time.

In 2010, I stayed in Konya. A bit cool, of course, it was January, but still nice. The tomb of Rumi is quite the attraction.

I once lived in Bakersfield, and noted that some said it was hotter than hell and also colder than hell.

Since I had become acclimated to the local weather, I said that when I die I would be thoroughly ready, if I went there.

Unless I return to my old ways, I don’t plan on spending any time in either place.

There are at least two other locations in the Middle East that are purported to be the entrance (or exit) to Hades, or “the Abyss”. One is in the caverns of Caesarea Philippi in northern Israel at Banias, and the other is on Temple Mount in Jerusalem. According to legend, when the builders of the first Temple tried to remove the rock that seals the entrance, the shrieking of the damned was heard, and the stone was quickly replaced. This place is now located under the Dome of the Rock.

Only the eunuchs of Cybele, an ancient fertility goddess, were able to enter the “gate to hell” unscathed, according to mythology.

They should send Boehner and Mitch McConnell to explore the place, I am sure neither would be injured.

Is Turkey safe for tourists to travel around in?

Some time back there was a thread that had to do with Turkey and one of the posters claimed that if you got away from the major tourist sites and went into small out-of-the-way places, the people hated Westerners (as if it might be risky to visit such places).

I've never been to Turkey although there are a number of places I would like to visit. I've also heard people speak well of the Turks to the effect that they are friendly and welcoming to tourists.

I like Hierapolis. It’s got great ruins and isn’t far from Laodicea.
