Pluto's 'Gate to Hell' uncovered in Turkey

Italian archaeologists have uncovered Pluto's Gate, the so-called "gate to hell," in southwestern Turkey.

In Greco-Roman mythology the cave was considered the portal to the underworld. It was found in the ancient ruins of Hierapolis, now called Pamukkale, and was described by Cicero and the Greek geographer Strabo in their writings. According to Strabo, the opening was filled with deadly vapors.

"This space is full of vapor so misty and dense that one can scarcely see the ground. Any animal that passes inside meets instant death," Strabo wrote. "I threw in sparrows and they immediately breathed their last and fell...

Neat.

I am reminded of other places where Carbon Monoxide (???) or some such deadly gas seeps up out of the ground, and kills animals which wander nearby.

According to D'Andria, Pluto's Gate was a sort of tourist attraction, where pilgrims tested the cave's deadly emissions with small birds, while priests sacrificed bulls to Pluto. Animals were led into the cave, then brought out dead. Pilgrims slept near the cave after taking water from the pool and received visions and prophecies.

I hope they gated off their hellish discovery. One curious child and ... lawsuit!

I remember reading an article in Smithsonian about a lake in Africa which, you might say, “burped” and the released gases killed a lot of people and animals. I don’t remember any details but surely an Internet search could bring up more info.

"We could see the cave's lethal properties during the excavation," he said. "Several birds died as they tried to get close to the warm opening, instantly killed by the carbon dioxide fumes."

Not carbon dioxide! (Do birds die if people exhale on them?)

Get yourself surrounded by pure carbon dioxide, and you will asphyxiate PDQ.

(What we breathe out is only a percent or two richer in carbon dioxide that what we breathed in.)

Up in Mammoth Lakes, California. A minor earthquake opened a fissure that let out CO2 that killed about ten acres of trees.

They have had groups camping near Mammoth Lakes die from the high CO2 concentration from volcanic vents.

Very active area; the ground there is rising constantly.

A few years back I believe it was three ski patrol officers were killed on Mammoth Mountain. One fell through the snow into a void that had formed filled with CO2 and the other two were killed trying to rescue him.

Very few people realize that the entire valley containing Mammoth Lakes and extending all the way across 395 to Crowley Lake is one giant caldera, and Mammoth Mountain is just one lava and cinder dome. When you drive down the Owens Valley, you pass through vast lava fields and a number of cinder domes,

Mammoth Mountain is one hell of a big cinder dome!

You can see it clearly from the hills around Clayton almost any normal day.

Trees respire O2 just as animals do. The photosynthetic cycle using CO2 is in addition to that.

Small service manholes for utilites are often death traps. Gases that push out breathable air and leave various non-breathable combinations in its place often seap in or collect in manholes from the earth or connected utilities.

Before the more restrictive rules on “confined space entry” utility workers of utility company people died quite often from just ducking down into a manhole to close a valve or take a measurement. I think Delphi had something similar.

When they collapse into the bottom of the hole, without a harness and a rescue tripod, there is often no way to get them out without ventalating the hole to a safe degree and then someone else entering the space to get them hoisted out.

In th case of this spot, a natural vent of such gas was noted and marked for a whole era in history — quite interesting.

Sanitary sewer systems make H2S, and CH4 in abundance, so any manhole is a potential death trap, but volcanic vents are not so easily recognized.

There was an old well on my grandfather’s farm. They would tell about when the whole community of women would gather there to wash their clothes. Over the years it showed signs of needing to be cleaned out. A man went down to clean it out and he came up dead. The well had filled with gas. I remember my grandfather constantly telling us kids to stay away from that well, which was by then surrounded by woods. I was fascinated by it and I’m sure I tried to get as close as I could without falling in.

“To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘I know your works, and where you dwell... where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to my name, and did not deny my faith even in the days in which Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.’” Revelation 2:12
