Zapping the brain with magnets could cure cocaine addiction

Cocaine addicts could be cured using a technique that stimulates the brain with magnets.

Experiments on mice addicted to cocaine found they were weaned off the drug after laser beams were used to change neurons in a particular part of the brain.

Scientists who report their study in the journal Nature say a similar strategy using magnets could work on human drug abusers—and clinical trials should start soon to see if it works.

They showed by stimulating a region called the pre-frontal cortex with light they could wipe away addictive behavior in the lab animals—or conversely turn non-addicted rats into compulsive cocaine seekers. …

Sorry. It’s the memory of the high that brings them back, even when they can no longer get high. (The brain adapts by making more receptors. That’s why it requires more and more of a drug to get high. Then, the downside is that the new receptors create pain because there are too many.) This guy is trying to get one of those 10 million dollar government grants.

That and pharmaceutical grade cocaine.

Anyone who has ever put their head into the bore of a superconducting 1.5+ Tesla MRI magnet and pulled it out real fast knows that it also substitutes for a few shots of Tequila.

“hmmm, I bet we won’t see Obama within 5 miles of this thing.”

I was thinking that perhaps extreme magnetism might cure the Obamadork of his record-setting stupidity and narcissism.

Might even give him the ability to make a hoop shot.

Going in the wrong direction. I expect nothing better from materialists who don’t accept the idea of free will and personal responsibility for one’s actions.

The mind is not a machine. Contrary what some scientists are saying.

On the contrary, a laser beam near your pre-frontal cortex can turn an animal on or off a drug.

Of course Obama is going to get his hands on this ‘evil thing’.

Much easier than being 'constrained'.

For someone addicted to cocaine, what harm could it do?

Go for it!

Scientists should stop doing research and just ask FReepers for the answer.

Hanging could cure alcohol addiction. Is that your favored approach?

“Scientists should stop doing research and just ask FReepers for the answer.”

The research is all about funding. It’s a government job. I worked for a professor in college and he and the grad students would howl with laughter when they wrote the proposals. The conclusions were always exactly what the buyer wanted too, regardless of the data. Call me jaded.
