I've read a couple of other books by Michener and I know he does not have 'conservative' ideals. However, Poland and the other Baltic countries have gone through one war after another. It makes me feel lucky that we are born in America, isolated from all this strife which is the entire history of Europe. However, just read the very first chapter of 'Poland', you get a glimpse of communism and what it's all about. How could anyone ever want to turn this county into a socialist/communist country when they can read what this type of government actually does?
I read ‘Poland’ several years back. It bounces back and for between 3-4 different eras in Polish history. If I remember correctly, the Siege of Vienna is in there as well.
Low-information voters think it's a grand idea.
Then when they hear about the new "who does not work neither does he eat" policy, they'll be all "poor me" as usual.
Of course, there won't be any television cameras present for that little epiphany.

That’s what my Russian friends keep asking.
They came here to ESCAPE communism, and now they see it happening all over again in their new country. The “occupy” morons are the Bolsheviks, using the same tired rhetoric about being the “majority”, which is what “bolshevik” means, and the one-percenters, which were the “Bourgeoisie” in Bolshevik-speak, all the same tired old maudlin marxist-leninist twaddle.
They will tell you,with a straight face, that all of the other times Socialism/Communism were tried, the people in charge were not pure of heart and wicked, but when THEY take over they will do it right and this time all will be well and no one will ever want for anything again. You know, a “workers paradise”.
Get the difference: Poland had Communism imposed on her (thanks to FDR and Churchill, advised by the likes of Alger Hiss.) We are going there voluntarily!
I remember reading Michener’s “Bridge at Andau” which recounts some of the horrors of commie rule in Hungary. It beats me how he can write a truthful book like that and then be a liberal.
Hope to get around to reading Poland someday...
Great book. Read it as a senior in highschool.
I never fail to be amazed at people who have the ability to put words together in a manner that make sense.
Norman Davies’ “God’s Playground” is also an excellent book on Polish history.
