SPRING STILL COMING ON

I got out with my son in law, got coffee and just rode around. Grandson is at National Guard annual training through this month so it's quiet around here. Even when he is asleep there is a subliminal rumble present LOL, and you miss it when he goes out the door.

The ponds were all quiet today, nothing but sunning Red-eared Sliders, Trachemys s. elegant. Believe it or not these are the same turtles they used to sell in dime stores, with the little tank and a plastic palm tree. Last week they were just peeking out of the water, today it was warm enough for sunbathing.

There are several Sliders, got to look close, but the red is a tip off.

The Double-crested Cormorants, Phalacrocorax auritus were sitting right were they were last week, there is plenty of food and they aren't working hard to find it.

Norway, upland at a largish river. Much colder than FL. Hardly any frogs, even. But lotsa swans.

Swampster..great depth of field on the turtle shot.Is that an “ole fashion” camera or one of them new fangled digital thangs?
Iam an ole Minolta 201 and Mamiya 645 type.
Still like my film although I am pricing out digital backs for the 645(not cheap).
Would like a Blad b4 I die

Swamp Turtle Gumbo

~ 4 – 6 lbs. turtle meat
~ oil
~ 1 – 2 lbs. smoked sausage, cut into 1” pieces
~ 1 large onion, chopped
~ 1 1/4 cups chopped celery
~ 1 1/4 cups chopped bell pepper
~ 2 tbsp minced garlic
~ 1- 14oz. can chopped tomatoes
~ 1 cup cut okra
~ 2 tbsp roux (flour gravy)
~ 1 – 2 tbsp Cajun seasoning
~ 2 cups water or turtle broth
~ salt and pepper
~ Louisiana hot sauce
~ cooked rice

Boil turtle meat in salted water until tender. Remove meat and save broth.

Chop meat into 1” – 2” pieces.

Place a small amount of oil in a Dutch oven or large pot.

Add turtle meat and lightly brown on all sides. Remove meat.

Add a little more oil if necessary and lightly sauté the onion, celery and bell pepper.

Add the garlic, tomatoes, okra, roux and Cajun seasoning.

Stir in 2 cups of water or turtle broth.

Mix in the turtle meat and sausage. Add salt and pepper and hot sauce to taste.

Heat to boiling, reduce heat and simmer 2 – 3 hours stirring occasionally.

Adjust seasoning as needed and add more water or broth if needed.

Serve over cooked rice and enjoy.

Got that with a Sony A200 and an old Sigma 400mm made for Minolta Maxxums. The Sony mount is the same. On the Sony it gives 600 mm equivalent.

I've got film gear all over the place, it's just too much work getting good processing around here.

You need at least one turtle and a frog, you could install another bath tub!

I live surrounded by swamps and marshes, everything from frogs to alligators.
