'Stephen Colbert's sister' represents the worst of American politics
The Week ^ | April 3, 2013 | Jeb Golinkin

Name one thing Elizabeth Busch stands for Yesterday, a person asked me what I thought of "Stephen Colbert's sister's" chances of winning "that congressional seat she is running for." I responded that they were decent because her likely opponent (former Gov. Mark Sanford had yet to win his runoff) has a lot of baggage. I paused, then asked why this person cared. "Because I like Stephen Colbert and dislike people that cheat on their wives." Fair enough, I suppose. But as I reflected on the comment, it dawned on me that despite the fact that following politics is literally my job, I knew nothing — and I mean nothing — about Stephen Colbert's sister other than that she is Stephen Colbert's sister and the Democratic nominee in the race to represent South Carolina's 1st Congressional District in the House.

Forgetting the pros and (many) cons of Mark Sanford. One thing that's been overlooked in this race is just how brazen Stephen Colbert has been about the level of support, if not worship, he gets from large pockets of the population. Even worse, the media are afraid to call him out on it, lest he make fun of them. ("Stephen, how are you so much better at telling the truth than we are?") Colbert stopped lampooning a self-absorbed blowhard and became one himself some time ago. I can barely watch the show anymore, but when I do, it seem his "jokes" these days are little more than self-righteous statements designed to get hoots and hollers of approval from his audience. I'm just wondering what kind of segments Colbert would have if O'Reilly actively pushed for HIS sister to get elected.

Those are called fans. They tend to be fanatic.

How popular is Colbert in this particular S. Carolina voting district?

The real question is why these two thugs are even running?

In evry local story on this the media always uses the "Steven Colbert's sister" moniker when refering to Ms. Bush.

How many low information voters will see the name "Bush" on the ballot and pause?

When George W. Bush was President, Colbert was the entertainer at some dinner at the White House (probably the annual White House correspondents’ dinner). His “jokes’ about Bush were nasty and mean-spirited—he showed his own lack of class. Of course that probably appealed to most of the press people there.
