If you think about it, Reagan operated in at least as hostile an environment as we conservatives do today.

Indeed. And people we publicly called our "enemies" (like Iran) we were more than happy to wheel & deal with behind closed doors.
I have often asked myself - why did we have Reagan when we did?
It is almost as if God said, "You guys down there in America need to realize your roots and why I put you there."
