Airbus Plans Extra-Wide Seats For Fat Passengers ["Installed Only As Aisle Seats"]

Airbus Plans Extra-Wide Seats For Fat Passengers The lack of space on flights has long been a bugbear of British holidaymakers. But now the majority of passengers face aeroplanes with even less wiggle room after manufacturers announced plans to shrink two thirds of seats to make space for overweight travellers.

By Alice Philipson 12 April

Window and centre seats on Airbus planes could lose an inch of width while extra-wide seats may be installed to accommodate passengers who are too big to fit in normal sized chairs.

Airbus is offering the option of the extra-wide seats, which will be installed only as aisle seats, on A320 jets to accommodate what it describes as “trends in demographics”.

The larger seats will be 20 inches across instead of 18 inches – the standard width – and will cost more than the regular seats.

Stefanie Von Linstow, Airbus aircraft interiors marketing manager, told aviation website Flightglobal: "Passengers in the window seat are already happy and those in the centre seat might not be willing to pay as much for the extra width.

"The aisle seat seems the most attractive for the concept."

However, a survey by the Skyscanner website last year revealed 80 per cent of UK passengers were against the idea of losing space to accommodate overweight travellers.

Guam has had strict limits on how many fat people can visit their island at the same time for many years, the airlines need to learn to schedule fat people so that you don't get only one sitting on one side of those jets, to avoid this too familiar take off problem, what pilots call the Oprah.

I wonder if that’s why Rep Johnson from Georgia expressed concern that GUam might tip over if too many of our military congregate on one side of the Island.

How about they make them the same width they used to be before passengers became sardines.

I'm 6'-0", I wear a 54" jacket. I like the Aisle seats for the little bit of extra room they give me...

Except one time. I was in the aisle seat, the woman next to me was just as big as me....

Her husband, who was at the window made me look small.

I flew from Denver to Chicago, LEANING into the aisle. Most uncofortable trip ever.

Do I shive a get what Airbus does about wide seats, or anything else? Hell no...I will not fly anywhere on an Airbus. And if you are a US airline, take note!

2 inches?!?! For crying out loud. On many occasions, I have been forced to share half of my seat with a disgusting mouth breather that literally spills into my seat. They need to take the back half of coach and turn them into 36” Barcaloungers and offer fried chicken and donut service - at the same rate as first class, of course. If you can’t fit in the seat - take a damn Greyhound, I’m tired of having flab spill over arm rests into my lap.

Seat widths haven’t changed over the years. Pitches have shrunk (but thinner seat materials offset the loss of legroom), recline has been reduced.

But first class seating (at least overseas long haul) has gotten amazingly better.

I say thumbs up to a free market solution. Let the big folks pay more if they want more comfort.

Is this because too many fat people on Guam may cause it to tip over?
