Need information for an idea I have.

I have an idea that would use one of those greeting card type recordings but I would need .. or want .. one that would play about 3 minutes ...

TOPICS: Computers/Internet; Miscellaneous; Weird Stuff
KEYWORDS: recording
My idea is not a greeting card, but I'd want to use something small and electronic that could be recorded and turned on by a simple action (press here, motion sensetive, etc.)

Where do I get that kind of stuff and IS there a longer version of those little short recorded things?

Thanx

If you're into doing a little soldering on your own, you can build a hobby kit.

Digital Audio Record & Playback Module from Ramsey Electronics. Board measures 4.3" x 2.3" x 1" and runs on 9-12VDC at 100mA.

I don’t know your electronic prowess, so I’m skipping the awesome Ramsey kits and pointing you towards the pen recorders:

A little bit bigger than what I'd like, but the record time is perfect and I'm sure I can re-engineer what I think I think to accommodate the size ... thanx.

Price is acceptably a little higher than what I thought .. (not knowing ANYthing about the cost of what I'd like to do ... at this stage of my thinking)

That depends... Do you want the recording to self-destruct five seconds after playing, should the recipient decide to accept his assignment? ;-)

Note for later. Have an idea. How many do you need?

Well, the internet is loaded with what ya need info.

BTW, don't go to radio shack. The help will either stare blankly like a pooch at the pound, or respond in Arabic with an, "I kill stupid customer" attitude...I avoid stores....The help and the customers scare me...Give me the creeps...But occasionally, it's worth a 9 on the honking hoot scale...Big laughs abound.

Who needs the CIA? Homegrown science geeks who create cool gadgets in their garages don’t need the technocrat bureaucracy, and they avoid it. For obvious reasons.

There are greeting cards that let you record your own message. Then just tear it out of the card for your project.

Look for blank recordable cards with a search engine. You can buy 1 or 5 or 10 at a time. You need to check that the record time is adequate.

Probably talking mp3 player if you want that type of duration. I don’t know if there are one-chip mp3 players (w/a decent pile of memory) but I’d frankly be stunned if there weren’t. One design aspect is, how is the audio to be heard? Speaker (size consideration vs external headphone jack) also requires teeny bit of power to drive; might require a tad more amplification power than one could get on a single chip. And then there’s the fidelity consideration. If the desired “end product” is a spoken message, for example, more specifically the information contained therein, then cruddy “telephone grade” audio would work. What about durability of the product? Reusability/re-recordability? And, the more things you bundle together in this item, the more rugged an enclosure or physical substrate or container you might have to investigate. By that I mean, if it takes two chips, then somehow you have to mechanically mount those chips in a way that stays connected. Is how it looks important?

Just some thought points for you that come to mind.

If you’re smart, you’ll join forces with me. This aging population is going to be good to we Women Of Means. We tend to outlive our heavily-insured husbands. ;)

Build me a water-resistant Pool Boy Robot who can rub my feet, can slather on the coconut oil (on him or me? I don’t care, LOL!) and bring me perfectly blended Margaritas.

I’m getting up there in years and I’m gonna need one - SOON!

*BIG SMILE*

I’m as big a tinkerer as you will find and could tell you where to find as many odd little items as anyone. If none of these options work out, private mail me a message and I probably have exactly what you need, which sounds like something on the reply that links to ebay (motion activated recorder). I also have too much experience trying to get prototypes made and from my head to store shelves, so feel free to ask if you have any other questions.
