Gun Control Has Little Or No Effect On Crime (more or less)

We’ve all heard or made the case that places like Chicago, with some of the toughest gun control laws in the nation, have some of the highest crime rates, while places like Vermont, Wyoming, Idaho and others have easy access to guns and few gun control laws by comparison, yet have surprisingly low crime rates.

Anti-gun forces believe that places like Chicago have higher crime rates because the rest of the nation doesn’t have their same level of gun control.

I’m going to step off the reservation here and opine that we could add far more gun control laws or even wipe out the laws we have and it would have little or no effect relative to Chicago’s crime statistics. Why? Guess what Chicago has that places like Vermont, Wyoming, Idaho and others don’t have?

A high population of criminals.

The 2A wasn't written to evolve and be contingent on future crime statistics. If our founders could have looked into the future, I'm certain they would have agreed with me that we have a criminal problem, not a firearms problem.

Gun control is kinda like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober pople to own cars.

Gun control sure in the heck didn’t prevent deaths in Boston monday.

cannot say if it would have prevented it either but terrorists won’t always be hidden, they will be seen in action at some point and personally I am a lousy rock thrower.

Repealing Chicago’s gun control laws could possibly have the positive effect of reducing the criminal population of that city. At a minimum, the possibility of a would-be victim carrying a weapon would weed out all but the most determined assailants.

consider Michigan- detroit and flint are both in the top five cities for violent crime, and have fairly relaxed gun laws.

You also have to look at how stats are categorized. Detroit leads the nation in “Justifiable Homicide” but I can’t see that they’re listed as anything other than murder by law enforcement.

Slimestein is on CSPAN right now trying to add her assault weapons ban to the Manchin-Toomey bill. I had to turn the channel.

they list them under the catchall of “homocide,” with no distinction between murder and self-defense. same in every city.

on paper, there’s no difference. a couple months ago, there were two stories within a day or two of each other about justifiable homocide- one in detroit, one chicago. almost identical story of an older gentleman defending his home with an old rifle against a violent, criminal invader, with a rap sheet. difference was that in detroit, the gentleman was pretty much left alone by the police, in chicago, the victim was arrested. but for statistics, they would’ve been listed the same way.

The week the Detroit basketball coach killed a guy while defending himself and two girls, there were at least 3 other defensive shootings in Detroit.

There’s a blog called Second City Cop where cops can anamomosly post about what’s really going on here. Almost all think law abiding citizens should be packing.
