North Korean Exiles Scoff at Talk of War
go ^ | April 17, 2013 | TIM SULLIVAN

Asked if there might be war, the 40ish woman with the spangly purple shirt laughed out loud. She waved her hands back and forth, as if whisking away a pesky insect.

She fled North Korea late last summer, pushing her way at night through the chest-deep waters of the Amnok River, following a guide into China and, eventually, to South Korea. The journey cost her $5,000, a fortune back home. She comes from a part of rural North Korea where electricity is a rarity, and the punishing winters seem to last forever. She came to a city of two-story-tall TV screens that light up the night, a city stalked by armies of financial analysts in well-tailored suits.

Now, amid international fears that North Korea may be preparing for another missile test, and relentless over-the-top rhetoric from Pyongyang that it will destroy its enemies, she simply scoffs. The exiles have seen life in both Koreas, and are unimpressed with what they left behind.

"It's not even possible for North Korea to have a war,"........"They don't have fuel. They don't have electricity,"

I tend not to rely on uneducated people from remote villages which don’t even have electricity for advice on military capabilities.

I suspect the Norks must know any military push on the ground will last about as long as the Ardennes Offensive. I don’t believe this is headed to war, either.

Funny pictures, doesn’t help your argument or help anyone take you seriously on this issue.

I think the Nork military is deluded enough (if you are not deluded, you’re shot), war is possible.

North Korea can’t afford a war. All of this noise is their yearly temper tantrum that comes during the US/South Korea military exercises and right before Spring planting season. In another month much of the North Korean army will be out in the fields helping the farmers. Why do people fall for this bluster every year?

A LOT of people more knowledgeable than you or I are spending lots of time and money preparing for a war. Why? Perhaps because they know its a possibility, just like that SK ship which was sunk a couple years ago.

A LOT of people more knowledgeable than us, in theory, think a lot of dumb things about government and foreign policy - and make the same mistakes over and over.

This time next year we will be going through the same thing. And the same people, mostly in the media, will act like this is the first time the Norks pretended to be preparing for war. North Korea will begin their tempter tantrum to loosely coincide with the US/South Korean military exercises, and they'll wrap it up at the end of April in time for planting season - when their antiquated joke of a military will be out in the fields helping the farmers plant the years crop.

North Korea would get crushed in a war with South Korea - even without our help. It would be the end of North Korea. Period. They know that. North Korea does this year in and year out to rally their own people via nationalism and to try to win some food/fuel aid. We should remain vigilant, but otherwise ignore them. If we did that year in and year out, they may cut down on the bluster when they realize it doesn't work as a foreign policy tool.

North Korea has the chem/bio/nuclear weapons to take a lot of people with them. They also have China which would probably side with NK when the shooting starts.

China is not likely to ever go to war again on behalf of North Korea. When China moves forces to their border with NK, it is usually to help keep North Korean refugees out.

You are right, North Korea could take a lot of people with them. So we remain vigilant, just in case. But giving them the satisfaction of responding to their yearly temper tantrums only guarantees more of the same.

Next month much of the NK army will be out helping farmers plan the seasonal crops. And this time next year the North Koreans will kick up the bluster machine, just like clockwork.
