They all understand English over there, if they are Osties under 40 or Westerners under 80. A lot of them aren’t comfortable speaking English, but they can understand spoken and written English as well as the average US high schooler.
My uncle and aunt do not speak English and they live near Munich ( yeah where Mein Kampf was written ironically ).
I think it would help them to understand Obama better if they could read a book about him from the conservative viewpoint - the real facts about him.
Hard to figure out how 80 to 90 percent of Germans like this guy but then there are no books in German with the truth.
That is not true. I have been there and met many people of all ages who do not speak/read/know English.
There is a difference between understanding and getting by in a language and reading a book in a different language.
I can get by when I visit Germany, but I struggle with German newspapers and books; as I am sure Europeans who may understand rudimentary English struggle with English newspapers and novels.
I found the most English conversant people are the Belgians. The Germans not so much.
If there were books written in German about what a phony Obama is, I know it would be easier for Germans to read such a book in Deutsch than trying to read it in English.
