A weekend break from the monotony (Rock 'n Roll Vanity)
A mind in need of rest ^ | 4/21/13 | Baynative

To break the monotony of the media rushing to make fools of themselves over the Marathon bombing story I thought I'd bring up a subject that got me thinking earlier today while listening to a classic rock station instead of my usual talk show selection.

I lived through the 70's explosion of hard rock music and although some of it still gets me rocking in my own geriatric way. I thought I'd ask if anyone here had bands that were popular that they never liked, or/and still don't care to hear.

My absolute favorite bands were Vanilla Fudge then Cactus when Fudge broke up and two went into Cactus; any iteration of Jeff Beck; Hendrix until Band of Gypsies (Buddy Miles cannot play drums).

Also liked Yes, ELP, Santana (while it was a band, not him), and Jefferson Airplane. Was ok with Zeppelin, but they weren't my favorite, and I hated the Who, even though they sat through our set at the Troubadour.

That’s originally from the “out of the blue” album cover. One of my favorites still today.

I hear a Styx song, and I change the dial as soon as possible.

Some Styx songs suck, but you've got to like this one at least:

The basic image is that of a late 1940s Wurlitzer illuminated jukebox wall speaker.

Kansas was my turn off band. Can’t figure why they were so popular in the 70’s. I just hated ALL their stuff.

Eddie Money was a singer I couldn’t handle.

Spirit. They were everywhere but nowhere. The guitarist played with Hendrix and taught Van Halen. The drummer came from 1940's big band music, the bass player went on to play with Firefall and Heart, one keyboard player went to teach music at Berkley and the vocalist wrote scores for television shows and movies. The nidus for "Stairway to Heaven" came from its guitarist playing a chord melody to Jimmy Page. JMO...

A lot of people think ELO is disco

Only on the Disco-Very album. Which really only had two disco songs on it.

Ah, dust in the wind...

Went to one of their concerts once and they dragged out a dummy and kicked it, then threw it into the audience. What was that all about?

Well actually they did have a very disco sound. But it wasn’t disco at all. It was more like a combination of classical and rock music, combined with synthetics. Very artistic from my point of view, and very worth listening to. The fact is that no one makes music like that anymore.

The Doors are a pretty depressing band to listen to. Some of their songs are good like "Crystal Ship" and "Soul Kitchen" but the rest of it makes you want to drive your car into a concrete wall.

Can't think of a more depressing song than "Riders On The Storm" which played on AOR radio endlessly during the early 1970s. I was just a kid then but I remember walking to a run-down Italian food joint in my neighborhood to order some pizza for my father. I was probably about 12 years old and back in those days, they let you sit at the bar while you were waiting for your take-out order no matter how old you were. So I ordered pizza to go and also a Coke to drink while I was waiting. Back then, you got the Cokes served to you in those iconic bottles that are now collectors items on eBay so the bartender took my food order and slided a Coke bottle down to me.

Like I said, it was a run-down place and at the bar you had some sad sack losers nursing Bud drafts. There was hardly any lights in the joint and the atmosphere was dark and dreary. The guy running the bar was this enormous 400-pound man who only had about three years left to live. He was perpetually sweating and whenever I went in there, he always stared at me like he wanted to take me out back and have his way with me.

Anyway, this "Riders In The Storm" song comes up on the jukebox and I remember being mesmerized by it and just having this feeling of impending doom coming over me. I wanted to get out that place so badly but I had to wait for the pizzas to come. The patrons at the bar are all wearing staring into their glasses and the smell of stale spilled beer permeates the room while the fat bartender is leering at me. I thought that song would never end, it seemed to go on for 20 minutes - I'm thinking whoever picked it on the jukebox paid to have it played multiple times.

Finally I get my pizzas and bolt out of the place only to find that it is pouring rain outside with thunder and lightning - just like in the song! For a thunderstorm had come upon us while I was sitting in there. I just bolted through the pouring rain the two or three blocks back to my house, completely drenching myself and the cardboard pizza boxes.

So every time I hear that song to this day, even 40 years later, that same feeling of doom and gloom comes over me and I think about that time I sat at that depressing bar waiting for the pizzas to get made.

There was a commercial on not long ago that showed this “loser” in his car getting into the music, playing the fake drums, singing loudly and jerking the head wildly. The song he was listening to? How Long (to the point of no return) by Kansas. I laughed so hard when I first saw it. It summed up my opinion on the song perfectly!
