A good rule of thumb is that if you have a camera pointed at you or a microphone in front of you, never say anything you wouldn’t want made public. Time and time again, people get caught saying or doing embarassing things because they thought the camera or microphone wasn’t on.

that’s why broadcast careers start off in Bismarck and not in New York or Chicago.

If only the newbie had dropped the words “Bush/Cheney” at the end, he’d still have a job.

I remember some of the newbies at my hometown tv station in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Some years ago one of the baby newsreaders was stumbling over the news, and he came to a certain word....yacht....which he had obviously never seen before. He stared at the word for a few seconds and then pronounced it YATCHED. I don’t recall him having a long career at the station.

Especially as a newbie weekend anchor. The weekends are where anchors prove their mettle to become ready for the weekday marquee spots. The station isn't sending out their best on the weekends, nor is the crew. I say give him another chance. A story about an unexpected hot mic with actress Anna Maria Alberghetti in a Broadway show;

snip-

Also, Alberghetti was apparently the first actress in a Broadway musical to use a body mike during a performance. During one performance, the actress exited on cue and had two minutes until she reappeared, bee-lining for the ladies room. However, this particular time the actress forgot to turn off her microphone, so during the middle of the show the audience heard the sound of streaming water followed by an unceremonious flush (which in itself was followed by Algerghetti’s re-entry). The audience was beside itself with laughter, but that’s the beauty of live theatre…

Read this story decades ago. The bathroom noises were described more graphically. It took a few for the audience to figure out exactly what the noises were. Story said she got a standing O when she took the stage again.
