What sounds like an April Fools Day prank was actually intentional -- the Mall of America celebrated Earth Day on Monday by voluntarily releasing 72,000 ladybugs into its indoor shopping facility.
The ladybugs were released in the Minneapolis mall in an effort to protect the large amounts of the mall's greenery, which are usually plagued by aphids.
Mall of America Senior Manager of Environmental Services Lydell Newby told Kare 11 that the bugs take the place of commonly used pesticides to control pests that would otherwise eat away at the mall's tropical plants.

Meh, its just ladybugs.
I got no issues with it.
I love ladybugs.
Ours got “displaced” by those weird Asian ladybug imposters that bite.
Pretty nasty when they bite though.
Where’s PETA? This is obvious insect abuse.
This seems to be a logical, intelligent, and cost saving solution to the problem. Some liberal will probably find a way to ruin it.
Native ladybugs don’t bite. Its the illegal alien bugs that bite.
I just wonder what the unintended consequences will be... Like clogged air vents, etc.
There are always unintended consequences. Some are truly funny, some are destructive. Occasionally, they are both.
Don't piss them off.
Are they paid full union wages and bennies....
I get those nasty orange ones in my house occasionally. My cat tries to eat them but I won’t let her. I throw them out.
Shouldn’t these bugs be renamed to be more gender neutral?
I was out mushrooming in the woods one warm spring day when I came upon mounded heaps of of ladybugs, so I scooped them up into a 5 gallon bucket (and it was full) and took them home and sprinkled them over my roses, yard and garden.
It was 3 years before I saw aphids on the roses again. Those ladybugs really did a number on the local population of aphids.
They will regret this. Stupid.
Screw “Earth Day”. Commie day more like it.
Get some lacewings in there, too!
My grandmother used to buy them to keep aphids out of her roses and raspberries.
Have you ever been infested by ladybugs?
My uncle’s home is every late winter/spring. It’s unbelievable. Plagues. Like the window scenes in Amityville Horror.
They may help aphids but indoors, they will start overwhelming certain things, and dying all over the place, to boot.
Ants farm aphids. They attack anything that threatens their livestock. I bought ladybugs only to see the ants kill them before they ever had a chance to kill aphids.
All good, until they end up clogging up the ventilation fans/filters. I’m sure all of those ladybugs will attract a lot of birds and other predatory varmints to further infest the mall.
(insert gratuitous Jurassic Park and WKRP turkey drop hubris reference quotes.)
“My uncles home is every late winter/spring. Its unbelievable. Plagues. Like the window scenes in Amityville Horror.”
Here in the northern Utah, each fall brings the pesky Box Elder Bug.
Hey, It works.
Mind you this infestation problem never occurred in western MD until about 20 years ago.
As for your boxelders, we have some, but the weirdest thing was years ago when we went looking for a new house. ONE house, only one, was INFESTED with them - all around outside of the front door. I have never seen that anywhere else, since, either.
Basically I like ladybugs, but when you go to my uncle’s and our neighboring 2nd house, you’ll get the willies. It’s bizarre.
...yes,indeed! - good catch.
Do ladybugs carry salmonella?
I hear what your saying about ladybugs. A few are fine...even cute, but when there are infestations, that's altogether different.
that will smwll nice when they begin dying and decomposing-
[[Ours got displaced by those weird Asian ladybug imposters that bite.]]
I heard that the left want to grant them immunity
The swarm became self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time.
Shouldnt these bugs be renamed to be more gender neutral?-lol- Personbugs?
it works. Green lacewings, trichogramma wasps, praying mantises, beneficial nematodes. dirtdoctor.com is our local guy.
A Møøse once bit my sister ...
Well it would have, if I had a sister.
The Food Court was a mess and many of them were stepped on, bloodying up the floors
I was kidding
I would have gotten some food put a lady bug in it and demanded that they give me free food and keep repeating until the food kiosk owners started thumping whomever thought this was a good idea...
Fine by me. I like lady bugs and a reduction on the use of pesticides .
[they’re just doing the work that American ladybugs won’t]
Yeah but the little punks stink and bite.
I like my good old fashioned bugs.
The box elder bugs only come where there are box elder TREES and if you don’t control them, the south side of your house will be red with them in spring. Horrid ugly prehistoric looking bugs. Had lots in MT.
Never buy a house with a box elder tree in the yard, or in the neighbors’ yards.
There are quite a few old wives tales or superstitions centered around the cute little ladybug. Here is a rundown on the different believes throughout history and even today on the ladybug.
The Norse believed that the ladybug came to earth by lightning and was connected to the goddess of love and beauty.
Weather and Harvest:
In northern Germany, counting the spots on the backs of ladybugs would tell if they could sell their harvest. If the ladybug had less than seven spots that meant they would have a large harvest.
In England, seeing a ladybug meant they would have a good harvest.
The French believe that a ladybug in their vineyard is a sign of good weather.
Austrians would ask ladybugs for good weather.
Love, Marriage and Children:
In Sweden if a ladybug walks on a girls hand it signifies that it is measuring her hand for wedding gloves, which means she will be married soon.
In Central Europe if is on a girls hand and it crawls under her hand she will marry within the year.
If a ladybug lands on you and then flies away watch it carefully, the way it flies is the direction of your true love.
When a ladybug lands on a woman in Burgundy, she should count the dots to see how many children she will have.
The country dwellers of England believe the spots on a ladybug stand for the months of happiness that are to come.
In Canada, is finding ladybugs in your garage, during the winter is a sign of good luck. If you pick up the ladybug and make a wish the way it flies is the direction in which the luck will come.
Killing a ladybug is believed to bring bad luck.
In Kentucky, the old wives tale is that if a ladybug lands on you will be getting a new shirt, dress, jeans or whatever it lands on.
The same goes for in your home, if a ladybug flies into your home and lands on your television be prepared for a brand new television.
There are lady bugs and then there are asian imposters which were imported by our government which did not know the difference. Th asian ones were released everywhere as a good aphid killing alternative to pesticides.
The problem is, these bugs are not climatized to USA so what they do is come inside and hibernate in your attic or other warm spots in your house, especially on the South facing side. Once they move in they will always remember your house and I have been in houses where whole inside walls are covered with them. They fly around and they stink, leaving your home with a distinctive odor. They come back every year in fall, come out in the spring to torment your household while hatching youn ones, and then do their job outside in the summer.
I hope the mall and all their customers will not be plagued by the recurrence of this problem for the next umpteen years.
Unintended consequences for sure.
