We still can’t believe President Obama stopped by Planned Parenthood this morning and lamented that he missed its “wild” party the day before. There’s a lot we’re still trying to grasp about the current president, and it seems we’re not alone. from Wiki- A hashtag is a word or a phrase prefixed with the symbol #,

OK, so hashtags are the words/phrase AFTER the pound sign... thx

One or two Metamucils a day and my Obamas come slipping right out.

No need to pull

If you add a hashtag phrase to your tweet it will end up on a list with all other tweets using that same hashtag. Everyone searching for that hashtag will be able to see your tweet, not just your followers.

British English calls it a hash. US and Canada calls it pound. In tech-speak it is usually a hash.

Before Jeffrey Dhamer started his career as a serial killer, he was the class clown in school. People in his school called screwing up, doing a Dhamer.

i always thought of myself as part of the technical community since i started programming in 1980 but never heard it called anything but pound sign/number sign... i can see the Brits calling it anything but pound sign since they use their fancy L for their pound/currency symbol

i guess the Wiki entry of it being the words/phrase after it makes sense

THANK YOU! And what the Hell does hashtag mean, anyway? Is it easier to say hash tag than pound sign? Both have two syllables.

In Perl (and lots of other interpreted prog langs) it is just a comment. :) In Java (what I usually program in) if I want a hash I call hash().

I’ve seen it called a hash in tech literature, but usually in common parlance as pound or number.

#tag : hashtag.

I think the “hash” is the “pound sign” and the “tag” is the letters that follow it.

I’ve been at it since 1967 and I’ve ALWAYS known this symbol a ‘hash’ within the systems / programming context. In some graphical / typographical contexts it is also known as ‘splat’.

I’d call it a ‘bang’. Exclamation mark in most non-computer languages.

shebang is another shorthand for, “#!”. Often how you tell the unix shell what script you are using.

“#!/bin/csh” or “#!/bin/bash” for example

Yes. Therefore it isn't a "pound" sign but rather a "number" sign. Pound sign is supposed to be after, not before. "I'd like a 10# bag of potatoes." Not "I'd like a #8 sheet metal screw."

You're welcome!

That’s actually a really good point. Lexical order matters in this case too. Interesting.

I’d like 8# of 8d nails please. #construction :)

when did the pound sign become hashtag?

I believe the hashtag is the pound sign "#" plus a phrase that is used as an index for related comments.
