Giant rubber duck floats in Hong Kong harbor
upi ^ | May 3, 2013

Posted on 05/04/2013 5:54:04 AM PDT by JoeProBono

HONG KONG, - Thousands of people snapped pictures of a 54-foot-tall rubber duck floating in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor.

The inflatable duck, created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, raised a stir and attracted crowds of hundreds when it floated into the harbor while a brass band played at Ocean Terminal, CNN reported Friday.

"Hong Kong has been changed forever," the artist said.

Hofman said the duck may look like a giant children's toy but it is meant to appeal to adults.

"I see it as an adult thing. It makes you feel young again. It refers to your childhood when there was no stress or economic pressure, no worry about having to pay the rent," Hofman said.

His "Rubber Duck" has previously visited countries including Japan, Australia, Brazil and the Netherlands.

Hofman said the duck's next destination will be the United States but the exact location is being kept a secret.

Am I the only one here who would love to see the duck take part in a carrier fleet exercise?

enough food, a small motor, an air and human waste system...

might be cool to be the first to cross an ocean in a rubber duck

” “Hong Kong has been changed forever,” the artist said.”

Yeah, right. I’m sure future historians will pinpoint the change of Hong Kong to the time some “artist” floated a giant rubber duck in the harbor.

Near the same as my first thoughts:

Someone who calls himself an “artist” plagiarizes a design from years ago, dramatically increases it size, fills it with air and sends it on a float.

Then, to top it off, he provides an explanation of what his “art” means while seriously expecting us to believe his “art” has changed the entire worldview of one of the world’s largest cities.

He’s just an attention whore and should be ignored.

All these rubber duck references and not one mention of the CW McCall classic.

I guess it's up to me then.

Ah, breaker one-nine, this here's the Rubber Duck. You gotta copy on me, Big Ben, c’mon? Ah, yeah, 10-4, Big Ben, for sure, for sure. By golly, it's clean clear to Flag Town, c’mon. Yeah, that's a big 10-4 there, Big Ben, yeah, we definitely got the front door, good buddy. Mercy sakes alive, looks like we got us a convoy...

Was the dark of the moon on the sixth of June
In a Kenworth pullin’ logs
Cab over Pete with a reefer on
And a Jimmy haulin’ hogs
We is headin’ for bear on I-one-oh
‘Bout a mile outta Shaky Town
I says, “Big Ben, this here's Rubber Duck.
And I'm about to put the hammer down.”

[Chorus]
‘Cause we got a little ol’ convoy
Rockin’ through the night.
Yeah, we got a little ol’ convoy,
Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin’ gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin’ convoy
‘Cross the U-S-A.
Convoy!
[On the CB]
Ah, breaker, Big Ben, this here's the Duck. And, you wanna back off them hogs? Yeah, 10-4, ‘bout five mile or so. Ten, roger. Them hogs is gettin’ in-tense up here.

By the time we got into Tulsa Town,
We had eighty-five trucks in all.
But they’s a roadblock up on the cloverleaf,
And them bears was wall-to-wall.
Yeah, them smokies is thick as bugs on a bumper;
They even had a bear in the air!
I says, “Callin’ all trucks, this here's the Duck.
“We about to go a-huntin’ bear.”

[Chorus]
‘Cause we got a great big convoy
Rockin’ through the night.
Yeah, we got a great big convoy,
Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin’ gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin’ convoy
‘Cross the U-S-A.
Convoy!

[On the CB]
Ah, you wanna give me a 10-9 on that, Big Ben? Negatory, Big Ben; you're still too close. Yeah, them hogs is startin’ to close up my sinuses. Mercy sakes, you better back off another ten.

Well, we rolled up Interstate 44
Like a rocket sled on rails.
We tore up all of our swindle sheets,
And left ‘em settin’ on the scales.
By the time we hit that Shy-town,
Them bears was a-gettin’ smart:
They'd brought up some reinforcements
From the Illinois National Guard.
There's armored cars, and tanks, and jeeps,
And rigs of ev’ry size.
Yeah, them chicken coops was full’a bears
And choppers filled the skies.
Well, we shot the line and we went for broke
With a thousand screamin’ trucks
An’ eleven long-haired Friends a’ Jesus
In a chartreuse micro-bus.

[On the CB]
Ah, Rubber Duck to Sodbuster, come over. Yeah, 10-4, Sodbuster? Lissen, you wanna put that micro-bus in behind that suicide jockey? Yeah, he's haulin’ dynamite, and he needs all the help he can get.

Well, we laid a strip for the Jersey shore
And prepared to cross the line
I could see the bridge was lined with bears
But I didn't have a dog-goned dime.
I says, “Big Ben, this here's the Rubber Duck.
We just ain't a-gonna pay no toll.”
So we crashed the gate doing ninety-eight
I says “Let them truckers roll, 10-4.”

[Chorus]
‘Cause we got a mighty convoy
Rockin’ through the night.
Yeah, we got a mighty convoy,
Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin’ gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin’ convoy
‘Cross the U-S-A.

Convoy! Ah, 10-4, Big Ben, what's your twenty?
Convoy! OMAHA? Well, they oughta know what to do with them hogs out there for sure. Well, mercy
Convoy! sakes, good buddy, we gonna back on outta here, so keep the bugs off your glass and the bears off your...
Convoy! tail. We'll catch you on the flip-flop. This here's the Rubber Duck on the side.
Convoy! We gone. ‘Bye, ‘bye.

QUESTION 1:
How much did the United States pay this guy, from the National Indowment For The Arts?

QUESTION 2:
How much did the US spend on this advertising gimmick for Hong Kong?

Answer to Question 1: Zippo. NEFTA put in no money for this.

Answer to Question 2: Zippo. This guy is Dutch, and he’s done this in other places around the world, but never in the US. We spent nothing on this.

For once.

History ‘repeats’ itself.

When it gets to SF and offloads its troops, it will be forever known as the “TROJAN DUCK” replacing the “TROJAN HORSE” as the best ruse to overcome a bunch of ‘sleeping idiots’.

This is ‘progress’ for Hong Kong Harbor, when I used to (drunkenly) ride liberty boats back to the assembled USN ships in the Harbor, the only ‘threat’ was an occasional Junk darting in the path of a fast moving USN Liberty Launch/Boat. Or Mary Tsu who would graciously paint the assembled vessels at a real bargain (ships ‘garbage’ to garner classified documents and garbage for resale in the ‘local’ restaurants??)

Had the ‘Duck’ been spotted in the Harbor, many a sailor would have ‘sworn off’ the demon rum.
Like San Diego, the bridge is ‘NEW’.

King George: I must have it, I must get it, You must go and get it for me!
If you want me to be happy, then you'll show me you adore me.
Don't rest another minute till it's sitting here before me,
If you wanna do your best, I would suggest you go and bring me back that duck!

Louis: But sir, if I could just jog your memory, you already have quite a few duckies.

King George: Those are yesterday's duckies.

Louis: Huh? wh-what these are perfectly god duckies, why most of your loyal subjects would love to have even one ducky this nice.

King George: I don't like these, I don't need these, I don't want these any longer.
My affection for those duckies isn't getting any stronger.
Just say I can't have what I want you couldn't be more wronger,
Don't ask me to explain, there will be pain
if you don't go and get that duck!....................Our conversation is over.
