Abercrombie & Fitch CEO’s Alleged Comments About ‘Larger Shoppers’ Strikes An Angry Chord With Women

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Controversial comments about plus-size shoppers made by the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch have struck an angry chord with women.

The size chart at the popular clothing store doesn’t go past a size 10, and that’s exactly how Mike Jeffries wants it.

According to Robin Lewis, the author of the “New Rules of Retail,” Jeffries said he “doesn’t want larger people shopping in his store. He wants thin and beautiful people. He doesn’t want his core customers to see people who aren’t as hot as them wearing his clothing. People who wear his clothing should feel like they’re one of the ‘cool kids.’”

In a 2006 interview with Salon magazine, Jeffries admitted his company isn’t targeting all shapes and sizes.

He said, “A lot of people don’t belong (in our clothes), and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.”

CBS2’s Kristine Lazar spoke with a number of women who were outraged about Jeffries’ stance on what is considered beautiful.

“Tells (women) that they need to be a certain size in order to appreciate their body and that’s not true,” said shopper Andrea Haykel.

“To be thin is to be cool, that’s what I think (he’s saying),” said Denise Vanleuvan. “That’s not okay.”

“There are full-figured women out there and they shouldn’t be judged by this man,” said Jessica Nerio.

Erica Ives, a certified eating disorder specialist, said it’s up to parents to use the publicity surrounding Jeffries’ quote to open up a dialogue with their teen.

“The first thing is… do not minimize their experience. But then, yes, you have to focus on the other traits that make people beautiful,” she said.

Lazar’s calls to Abercrombie’s headquarters were not returned.

There are a million reasons to hate Anercrombie. I boycott them for their horrible shirts that are unfair to individuals and groups. They did the Loser shirts and the throw rocks at boys shirts. I hate Abercrombie.

Guess you haven’t been to Ross or TJ Maxx. They seem to cater exclusively to short hippos.

Size 10 isn't hot, it's school-boy skinny

You know school boys that weigh 145 lbs? Have you ever bought clothes for a woman?

That was Claytie Williams, not Gov. Clements. That comment cost him the election to succeed Clements, too.

I thought the same thing. Wasn't Marilyn Monroe a size 12?

My daughter is a 4-6 and my niece is a 00 (yes Size double zero!) They don't even like the clothe at A&F. I believe one of nieces friends called it “skank central”. (Direct quote)

And just because you don't make a size higher then 10 doesn't mean people don't wear your clothes. I've been to the mall and to high school and there are people wearing clothes that don't fit. You aren't a Size 4 because you squeeze your butt into a Size 4! I am not considered “plus size” but I'd rather see a larger person wearing proper fitting clothes then smaller people squeezing into clothes to try to “fit in”. ‘Cuz they don't “fit in”.

Look around now. Go into a Wal Mart, for example, and take a look around. It seems that at least half the population is grossly FAT these days.

Yeah, but that's because it's mostly women.

Abercrombie & Fitch was once an outfitter, IIRC. Now they are nothing more than titillaters.

Beyond a certain size there is no truly stylish clothing because an obese figure is unattractive and the best looking clothes in the world will still look like crap. If you cannot see the underlying bone structure and musculature of the human body, it’s form, then there can be no style, beauty of any kind.

People come in a wide variety of bone structures and musculature types but any and all of them will be unattractive when smothered in layers of excessive body fat. Pro-fat people can argue all they want that fat is just as beautiful and that the preference for non-fat bodies is just a cultural thing but they’re wrong.

If your fat and your reading this and getting huffy remember I’m just talking about the body not a person’s character, personality etc., which obviously can be beautiful despite being physically unattractive.

Now, I’m off to eat another peanut butter moon pie!

I believe stores like Holister and American Eagle (daughters choices at the mall) have signs in them that they sell larger sizes online. Maybe GAP to. Not positive about that but I think so.

So... A ‘gay’ business owner is being biased and prejudiced and is bullying fat women. Sounds like a case for Michelle Obama to pursue.

I could be wrong but I suspect this big mouth is all for forcing the baker to bake a cake for homosexual weddings.

The double standard is what chaps my butt.
