Puppy Stuck in Abandoned Car for 1 Month, Animal control searching for owners
KSHB ^ | 05/06/2013

A 12-week-old puppy found locked in an abandoned car survived by eating scraps of McDonald's food for almost a full month, according to rescuers.

"It's devastating to hear, and then it's inspiring to hear at the same time," Tori Fugate with KC Pet Project said. "Hearing how this little girl has lived in this car for this long in those conditions is just amazing."

Animal control officers are trying to track down the puppy's owners by tracing the car's license plate number. They say the owners will face criminal charges if found.

The puppy, who rescuers named Kia, was discovered by an employee at the Kansas City tow lot on Monday, Fugate said. The car had been in the lot since April 8.

"She's really scared. She has been since she got here," Fugate said. "She's shaking, poor thing."

While Kia was dehydrated and emaciated, she's expected to survive. Anyone who wants to help Kia can call the KC Pet Project at 816-513-9821.

How about the tow driver? He didn’t look in the car when he towed it? What if there was a baby in the car?

I'm sure there will be plenty of people willing to take her home.

And if the owners are ever found, someone oughta lock them in a small space with no food for a month. What is wrong with people?

It’s hard to believe they didn’t see it. Wonder how long the pup had been in the car before being towed. Who has so much McDs in their car that a puppy can survive for a month+ ?

This animal will have 'issues' related to food and water.

The prospective owner will need to be patient.

I am wondering what he drank. I can see a dog surviving on very little for a month, but not more than few days without water.

I couldn’t believe it was possible. Maybe rain that was getting into the car?

I adopted 2 dogs from a shelter in March. One was 7, the other they think is 10. The oldest, Darla, has no teeth, and she and dru were brought in as strays. Their poor little ribs were sticking out. 2 weeks after I adopted them, they both had litters of puppies. I think I found out who dumped them and the only reason I am not in jail is because my boyfriend convinced me that pistol whipping that fat scumbag might mar the finish on my gun.

I doubt the car was “abandon”. More likely, the owners thought the car was stolen, called the KANSAS CITY POLICE, and the police dropped the ball. The KANSAS CITY TOW LOT had possession of the car, and had responsibility for it and its contents.

Oh, it is not a “little girl”, it is a dog.

KANSAS CITY GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES.

Tax $$$ at work and all news media will follow this story for weeks rather than any real news.

I love puppies, and we live in a very small town. At the local Walmart there is frequently people selling puppies in a small grassy area near the entrance. So there were these 2 people there and they were dog breeders. They had a portable kennel set up and every single puppy looked identical to Dru or Darla. I would need a DNA test to prove it, but I am sure it was. In our area, 4 pound pure bred chihuahuas are pretty rare.

I imagine the finish could be restored:)

I find it hard to believe the pup could survive a month in a car, even with open windows. Little if any water? Couldn’t be that much McD’s in there.

They better stop assuming the car owners are the dog owners. I’m repeating several suggestions here in my post, including it could be stolen.

They need to be wary of the impound people, as well as any jerk who could access the car and stick their unwanted dog in there.

Sounds to me there are so many possible culprits here.

Often male dogs are referred to as “boy dogs” and female dogs are referred to as “girl dogs”. Being referred to as “this little girl” is not an attempt to equate the dog with a human. Similarly, when we called our “girl” dog “baby” we do not mean to imply she is a human baby.

There have been amazing stories of pets surviving in the unlikeliest of circumstances. Some that were locked in homes/apts. during Katrina where floodwater did not enter and there was no food/water for prolonged periods. Some very heartbreaking stories as well. Or even now, cases of abandoned animals surviving against amazing odds.

But, I hear ya. And, really, true, how much scraps from McDonald’s could be in there? It’s not like the pup had the reasoning to ration things, either. They may be speculating based on food wrappers found in the car, that the dog had access to scraps, when there may have only been wrappers to begin with.

They should find the owners and lock them in a car with a few McDonald Scraps for a month.

Maybe not. This German shepherd went 35 days tied to a tree without food and water after being abandoned by the owner. He ate dirt and rocks for nourishment and drink from rain water.

He is a very healthy 95 pounds now, no medical or mental issues.

As Cesar would say, dogs live in the moment. Don’t linger on the idea the dog will have issues. Although a pup is more likely to have problems than a grown dog.

Really? it’s NOT a little girl?

I guess you’re NOT a human either.

Born to Conserve...Conserve what? Compassion, Feelings, how about your God given DUTY to protect the companion animals He made for man?

I pity any “little girl” or “little boy” of ANY species that crosses your path.
