In the language of the day, the English regarded all Calvinists as presbyterians. The only difference that later appeared between Congregationalists and Presbyterians was in church governance.

In some colonies, for instance New York, you could predict fairly well whether someone was a patriot or tory by their religion, the tories being almost all Episcopalian. Obviously, that did not hold true as one went down into the Southern colonies.

Thank you both for further clarifying. I was unaware of the difference in lower case p and cap P presbyterians. Very interesting.
