Monster radiation burst from Sun
BBC News ^ | 5/14/13 | BBC

The Sun has unleashed its most powerful eruption of 2013 so far.

The solar flare - a sudden release of radiation - peaked at 1705 BST on Monday, and was associated with a huge eruption of matter.

When these eruptions reach Earth, they can interfere with electronic systems in satellites and those on the ground.

Nasa said this solar explosion - known as a coronal mass ejection (CME) - was not directed at Earth, but it could pass several US spacecraft.

The event on Monday was classified as an "X-class" flare - the most intense type - with a designation of X2.8 (higher numbers denote a stronger flare). It surpassed an X1.7-class flare that occurred 14 hours earlier.

They are the first X-class events to occur this year.

The flare on 13 May comes as the Sun is approaching "solar maximum"

Eruptions such as this one in August last year, demonstrate the raw power of our parent star

Solar shout out to satan’s favorite son. “Double down and dig in Barry-boy.” - Satan, vacationing at the moment at an equatorial hotspot on the sun.

Odd coincidence.

The guys at SPACEWEATHER.COM seem to have shut down and headed to their basements.

Several years ago we had the Largest X-class flare on record. It glanced off one side of the Earth, causing little damage. It was not mentioned much in the media, nor in astronomy circles. I asked an expert from NASA what would have happened if it had hit directly ? Would it be like 'french fried people'?

All he said was 'yes'.

When those 'in the know' don't want to talk about it, it must be bad.

Solar winds do not travel near the speed of light....takes a while longer to reach us.

Be careful what you wish for. That 'active' region is just turning to face the Earth.

The uncontrollable red glowing orb in the sky has nothing to do with climate.. it’s your car. Now don’t question me and pay more in taxes and buy my carbon credits and you will be saved.

BTW, here is an article about the concern I mentioned.

“And with this dynamic sunspot region just now coming around the Sun’s limb and into view, we can likely expect much more of this sort of activity… along with a steadily increasing chance of an Earth-directed CME. “
