Jay Harris, Downingtown East’s star wide receiver, said he phoned a Michigan State assistant two weeks ago and broke the news.

He would not be a Spartan.

“I wish we could’ve got you,” Harris said the coach told him.

It was not a rival program that drew Harris, but instead a different career path. The 5-foot-11, 162-pound senior said he wants to make it as a rapper.

On the bright side, nobody will have any reasonable expectation of him staying out of prison.

Why does every black guy think he/she is a professional-grade rapper (whatever the hell that is)?

It is all just syncopated speaking — Maynard T. Krebs would have been hailed as a brilliant rapper if he just was black and threw in “’ho” and a lot of f-bombs.

This kid is too stupid to be in football anyway — it requires much more thought than he is capable of.

Probably for about the same reason so many White guys think they can write or direct movies ...

I commend the kid for following his dream. He’ll still be young should his rap career fail, but that failure beats looking back and wondering “What if?” if he doesn’t give it a try.

Nonsense comparison. I don’t know one white guy who desires to be a director. I know a handful of blacks, 3 want to be rappers.

As we all know, rapping requires at least four years of classroom time, labs, independent study and tutorials to acquire real proficiency. Otherwise you’re just a dilettante

Couldn’t he just work on songs while playing football. It’s not as if they really go to college to learn.

Doubtful. Very doubtful. Statistically, Mr. “Jay DatBull” will most likely end up as knuckle draggin’ bullet stopper, with no marketable job skills. Here’s hoping he at least keeps a day job and learns a trade.

Aspiring rapper... that’s almost the world’s deadliest profession (after being an Iranian nuclear physicist).

One thing this guy won’t need is a resume.

To write a book about being a movie director, of course.

maybe he is a better rapper than a football player, but as a football player his rapper aspirations would be the personal interest angle that would have been repeated often.

>>Probably for about the same reason so many White guys think they can write or direct movies ...<<

I grew up and spend a lot of time with Whites (it can’t be avoided in the suburbs of America).

I never knew one who wanted to be a director.

But look at TV and see portrayals, court shows, and criminals: there is an undeniable trend that they are “aspiring rappers.”

Are you saying otherwise? Are you suggesting I am wrong?

What exactly is the point of your post, besides showing your grasp of false dichotomy and straw men.

First of all, I was at least in part tongue in cheek -- semi-serious, semi-satirical as the saying goes.

Secondly, lot of that "aspiring rapper" or "aspiring DJ" stuff isn't serious. It means people perform on amateur nights and don't have any other more serious ambition, not that they're serious prospects working to achieve their goal.

Of course it costs more money to make a film than to rap, but my point was -- you can find that sort of pipe dreaming in other parts of the population. And judging from what's out there, it sometimes seems like every privileged White youth out there is making lousy movies, or wanting to.

Finally, I wanted to get away from the whole "Heh, heh, silly Negro" mentality. Odds are he won't make it. I'd go with college if I were him, but good luck to him all the same.
