Word For The Day, Monday, 5/20/13

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

fractious; adj.

1. refractory or unruly: a fractious animal that would not submit to the harness. 2. readily angered; peevish; irritable; quarrelsome: an incorrigibly fractious young man.

Etymology: fractious

1725, from fraction in an obsolete sense of "brawling, discord" + -ous; probably on model of captious. Related: Fractiousness

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with WFTD.

The word fractious means to be unruly or not submissive. This word is often confused by people with the word factious. A sentence using the word fractious could be 'The fractious horse would not allow the harness to be put on'.

EW Jackson, newly nominated candidate for Lt. Gov. in VA will be perceived as fractious by the Dems. He has urged blacks to leave the Democrat plantation.

xshub and xsbaby were both delegates to the Republican state convention in Richmond this past weekend. To xsbaby’s delight, her nametag said VIP delegate on it, and xshub’s did not. It has to be because of her past work for the fairfax co. republicans. it was a great experience for her and a long day. They keep balloting until there is a majority winner. EW Jackson, who has been on Glenn Beck and mentioned by Rush, in the past, is our candidate for Lt. Governor— a black preacher speaking truth to black power! Ken Cuccinelli was unapposed for rep nomination as governor.

This corrupt administration probably describes Mrs. Engelbrecht as fractious but I love her spunk and hope she ends up taking them all down for how they are trying to oppress her rights and family business. This crap has got to stop.

On the IRS, Barry got fractious
Told a tale that was pure lying sack-tious
“On the news, how I heard”
Well we know that’s absurd
When there’s evidence, he’ll get retractious

Catherine Engelbrecht is a true hero. As such she deserves the Medal of Freedom. Of course, I don’t see that happening any time soon. Perhaps there is a high honor that the TX legislature can award her.

I think that it is interesting that she lives in Fort Bend County. (I lived there 10 years.) Ft. Bend is also the home of Tom Delay and is considered a Republican County now (wasn’t always that way). It alwo is part of Ron Paul’s former district. It think that it is propitious that a Democrat (Ted Poe) is defending her.

My daughter (a teacher) sent this article to me today with the attached seniment: “This story made it to my Facebook feed today and made me very sad. Our students and our children deserve better than this – a national disgrace.”

http://www.citypages.com/2011-02-23/news/inside-the-multimillion-dollar-essay-scoring-business/

Even though the article is a couple of years old, I’ll bet this is still going on. Anybody who has kids in school, or who are caught in the college application racket, should take note. Seems to me that the kids are graded more on form than on content.

The site is about a 15 year old girl who has decided that the Holacaust is a Holahoax through her “research”. I think she won some kind of award for her work, but the site went down while I was reading it, so I can’t be sure. I think you can blame the WFTD folks at FR for knocking it out! ;-)

I was home Saturday, but am now in Houston for the week.

Surprised that the Metro trains did not have pre-recorded announcements. And that they weren’t bilingual. Just had someone murmuring into the microphone.

I don’t use babytalk even to babies. It’s unprofessional. I don’t like people doing it around me either. One of my colleagues babytalks to her spouse and I roll my eyes every time and am so tempted to say were you talking to a baby just now?

No work today, but I’m waiting for the AC guy to come fix something they neglected to fix right the last time they were here...

In a world that has gone mad
And countless scandals abound
It is no wonder so many of us
Feel the need to go to ground

As Obama’s fractious minions
Make enemies’ lists for the IRS
The leaks begin-where they end
Will be anybody’s best guess

Will a brand new Haldeman fall-
Maybe a Dean or another Liddy?
Whoever falls on Obama’s watch.
I doubt anyone has much pity...

i don’t think using a term of endearment is babytalk. and hon, as far as terms of endearment go, is pretty tame. while it might be unprofessional for me to refer to my supervisor at work as hon, or him to call me that, a caregiver using it with a patient is just attempting to show kindness, IMO.

While many, even waitresses use the term “hon”....it’s laziness. You, as a patient, are not worth me using your real name. All become faceless patients with the same name. Sad.

dang, you people are harsh. If it’s my dr, that’s one thing, he/she’s not going to call me hon. though i have to say now that i think of it, my Iranian born internist, a woman, does call me “dear” and i have zero problem with it. It’s professional to you and to SG bc caregiving is your business. it’s not mine, and IMO any sign of compassion from a caregiver when you are hurting in any way is appreciated and not looked upon as babytalk. i know xshub has been called hon by caregivers at various times [prob not his doc] and he doesn’t take umbrage or even raise an eyebrow at it. and i assure you, ain’t no one calling him HON anywhere else.

i think most people feel very vulnerable if they are a patient and most acts of kindness, terms of endearment, are a comfort. if my dr/nurse were calling me Mrs XS or by my first name constantly, i’d find that a bit cold actually.

I haven’t used the AC in my truck-I’ve been so long without that luxury (the one in my car hadn’t worked for years) that I just don’t even think about it any more, and save the gas mileage instead.
