Tech Ping, My Website Host Has Been Offline for a Week, What to do?
5/24/13 | Chickensoup

My website host has been offline for a week citing weather problems. Now I am concerned about my Google ratings when what seemed to be a few days has turned into a long time.

Do I need to be concerned. How can I move to a different place if necessary.

Help!

Hello ronald Ron r: Hello, Welcome to the company.com How may I help you today? Soup: My website www.Womderful website.com is still not online after the power outage is it just my site or are you still having massive failure?

Ron: Yes Soup? Ron: Due to severe storms in the Saint Louis, Missouri area our Data Center experienced a severe power outage on both utility grids. Even though we have standby generators, the utility load was dropped across both A/B utility grids and this caused momentarily loss of power to our network. Upon power being restored, our immediate focus was to restore our network, routers, core switches, and email servers so we could communicate to our customers. Reports indicate this is complete for our clustered mail servers. Next, our SAN arrays which provide data storage attempted to rebuild and eventually it was determined the rebuild would not complete. The current status is we are restoring from our Disaster Recovery backup to the existing and new SAN array hardware. Currently our Network Engineers have not given us an ETA as to when the restore will be completed but it is our highest priority and I expect and update very soon. We do understand the urgency of the situation and will keep you updated via our website and support ticket center on the complete restoration of service. We appreciate your patience and understanding regarding this matter. We will follow-up with corrective action so this does not happen again and I assure you we will address this matter.

It does not matter what the “techno-babble” means. Move your site ASAP. These guys suck.

They're not doing well now, are they?

Find another ISP.

Submit another sitemap (.xml) to Googe as soon as you get the site back online. They will crawl it and establish that the URL is valid.

So I will be back where I was in rankings. I have not dared even to look. Afraid that the blank hits would hurt the rankins more

Use your backup copy of your web site . You do have backups don’t you? If not, you should have.

What diffference does it make what it means?

Network Solutins. Almost zero downtime for my two 200+ page eCommerce websites for 10+ years. Your guys ever gonna match that? No, they aren’t. Pay the extra $10 a year to have it done right.

Pick a new web host and they'll provide you with instructions.
I use InMotion and have zero complaints.

There is a lot of finger wagging and not a lot solutions on this thread.

You should have made backups. Use network solutions because they are the best.

Here is a little secret for all of you out in Rio Linda... most of these servers are in the same locations.

If the storm that hit your data center had hit network solutions data center, network solutions would be down.

According to the note you received they had all the backups that can reasonably be expected for your $10 per month hosting account.

If you want to be safe, load a complete copy of your website onto another host’s servers in a different part of the country. (Yes...you will have to pay an additional $10 per month!) When your site goes down...just update the DNS and your backup site will show.

Of course, you will have to keep these files up to date on a regular basis so that both sites match exactly.

Beating up your hosting company because their building didn’t survive an F5 tornado...I don’t know if that is fair.

Now...to be fair...when things like this start to happen, you have to ask yourself...when is the last time they upgraded your equipment? Have they moved you to new servers in that 10 years? If not, you may want to look for two new hosts...one main and one backup.
