Behind the Candelabra Proves It: Our Greatest Romances Are Gay
Guardian ^ | Thursday 23 May 2013 | Tom Shone

As Soderbergh's Liberace biopic hits our screens, why is it that homosexual love stories now work so much better than hetero?

I know where I'll be Sunday night. The reviews coming out of Cannes for Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic, Behind the Candelabra, which airs on HBO on Sunday night, have turned it into must-see TV.

We might have been able to guess that Soderbergh's take on the kitsch-addicted superstar would turn out to be "mesmeric, riskily incorrect, outrageously watchable and simply outrageous" (The Guardian). Or that Michael Douglas would be "shrewd, rude, wickedly funny" (Indiewire) in the central role. What is interesting is that the film, which was made for HBO because it was "too gay" for mainstream cinematic release, has turned out to be "both hilarious and heartrending" (The Playlist), an "intimate love story" (Thompson on Hollywood) and Soderbergh's "most emotional and touching work" to date (Hollywood Elsewhere). This is interesting but not surprising, for it only confirms my suspicion that the best love stories, these days – the most wrenching, plangent and affecting – are gay.

Put it this way: what was the last great straight love story you saw? There are many who swear by The Notebook (2004), although as Hollywood continues to drive the Nicholas Sparks bandwagon into the ground, even Rachel McAdams poked some sly fun in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, where she questioned the sacred Sparksian connection between romance and rain: "What's wonderful about getting wet?" What heresy! Off with her head!

Flop coming soon

Boy, I'm afraid so. If anyone has seen the prelim photos of Michael Douglas and thought of anything other than a mortician, then good luck. Liberace was fat-faced, and Douglas just looks like some mortician should be sued.

I sure hope it becomes a huge turkey.

The relentless (and successful) attempt by the MSM to 'normalize' homosexual behavior continues, unabated.

This upcoming HBO film about the flamboyant homosexual Liberace, who's act was accepted by most people in his day even though homosexuality wasn't, is just another way to convince normal, heterosexual Americans that being 'gay' is no big deal and should be accepted as 'normal' with any criticism seen as akin to racial hatred.

That why the 'gay' advocates coined the word 'homophobe', to diminish any perfectly normal aversion to homosexual behavior and make it seem as if those who reject homosexuality are somehow the odd ones. This film just reenforces that lie.

Well, when they’re ready to let go I’m sure sheryl crow will be right there to make sure they only use one sheet per. After all, they are all really full of it already. As for bonohead, he can keep his sorry political useless butt in Ireland. And “the edge” as well. What morons. But they’re rich morons.

Liberace is a sad story that should never see the light of day. The man was talented, no question, but his excesses overshadowed the accomplished pianist he was. I don’t understand why anyone would want to glorify his behavior. It’s not admirable and never was

But I’m sure there will be hordes who will tune in to this garbage. I won’t be one of them.

A male trying to mate with another male by sticking his penis into the other male’s anal canal, is insane.

What does “work” mean?

“Make money?” I doubt it.

“Big audiences?” I doubt it.

“Gets an award?” Probably, but who cares, the faggots awarding themselves faggot awards for faggotry.

I wasn’t aware that there were any great gay romance stories, much less that they so vastly outnumber straight ones these days as the author claims. He’s living in a whole different universe, apparently.

“Homophobe” is half slang. But the actual meanings of “homos” (same) and “phobos” (fear), produce a word which literally means “someone with an irrational fear of those whose characteristics are similar to one’s own”.

Me, I’m not afraid of other straight heterosexual God-fearing conservative gun owners.

Liberace had talent but was a real flamer.
