As Soderbergh's Liberace biopic hits our screens, why is it that homosexual love stories now work so much better than hetero?
I know where I'll be Sunday night. The reviews coming out of Cannes for Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic, Behind the Candelabra, which airs on HBO on Sunday night, have turned it into must-see TV.
We might have been able to guess that Soderbergh's take on the kitsch-addicted superstar would turn out to be "mesmeric, riskily incorrect, outrageously watchable and simply outrageous" (The Guardian). Or that Michael Douglas would be "shrewd, rude, wickedly funny" (Indiewire) in the central role. What is interesting is that the film, which was made for HBO because it was "too gay" for mainstream cinematic release, has turned out to be "both hilarious and heartrending" (The Playlist), an "intimate love story" (Thompson on Hollywood) and Soderbergh's "most emotional and touching work" to date (Hollywood Elsewhere). This is interesting but not surprising, for it only confirms my suspicion that the best love stories, these days the most wrenching, plangent and affecting are gay.
Put it this way: what was the last great straight love story you saw? There are many who swear by The Notebook (2004), although as Hollywood continues to drive the Nicholas Sparks bandwagon into the ground, even Rachel McAdams poked some sly fun in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, where she questioned the sacred Sparksian connection between romance and rain: "What's wonderful about getting wet?" What heresy! Off with her head!

Who cares? This idea is just plain silly!
Ha ha, That’s got to be the funniest Liberace outfit ever—all those fur XXXXX-es dangling down!
“I guess Jerry Sanduskys escapades will one day be referred to with the same fondness as Romeo & Juliet.”
Jerry Sandusky will indeed one day be celebrated as a martyr by the very same people that tell us “gay marriage” won’t lead to anything worse. Sandusky will be the patron saint of the future “Greek Mentor” movement.
Farther than you'll ever know. Blame it on weird interaction between humans and monkeys.
Is that Tony Stewart? Lol

Recall that a congressman (don't recall if it was House or Senate) got busted in the 1970s having sex with his male aide and he defiantly held his ground.
He died while the media and DNC were rumormongering in the 2006 election "scandal" where the Republican congressman was caught engaging in sexually provocative texts when a male aide.
The media called the deceased congressman a hero.
The media claimed the Republican case was worse because "the GOP knew and did nothing". It was "evidence of a vast culture of corruption.
Except the media and DNC both knew more, sooner, and decided to sit on what they knew to save it for political opportunity as an October Surprise (one of 2 gay Republican outings that cost the GOP the House and Senate).
The story goes that, as he lay dying of AIDS, he asked to have his wig put on him. He was bald due to losing all his hair from disease.
Garbage.
This is just effete “porn”.
Don’t have HBO so can’t even see it accidentally. Did see a trailer for it while watching something else and almost hurled.
Well, I won’t watch it. What the heck for. The gay agenda continues...
But in defense of Liberace, who was more than just a gay man...
When I was a little girl and Liberace had his show I did watch that. I had a crush on him. He seemed so gentle and kind. I still think no one sang “I’ll be seeing you” as well. Something about it still resonates with me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nba4yCozwYE (and it’s ironic that the words ‘in everything that’s light and gay’...
and so, does this mean the Liberace Museum in Vegas will reopen?
Seems like you and Elton John had a lot in common.
Lee’s mama was Polish (named Frances Zuchowski), something that my and prolly your Polish friends liked to proudly point out, until, until... it became obvious to everyone that...
Work better for who? Certainly not for me.
a an absolutely brilliant pianist though, i give him that.....
The only time I wandered past Game of Thrones on the TV they were showing a rather graphic homosexual encounter.
Gerry Studds.
People have to realize that a very large percentage of film critics are homosexuals. They will promote homosexual films and homosexual agendas above all else.
