Whataburger spicy ketchup and mustard soon to hit supermarket shelves

Bolstered by the hype generated for its spicy ketchup, Whataburger has decided to start bottling the stuff. The burger chain will partner with HEB stores to sell it this summer. They'll sell the regular ketchup and mustard as well, and they are introducing a new potato chip product called Whatafries.

The ketchup will come in 20-ounce bottles; the mustard will be in a 16-ounce bottle. According to Whataburger, its mustard is a "one-of-a-kind" recipe dating back to the 1950s.

They are dubbing Whatafries a potato chip version of the their French fries, and they are crowing about the fact that they're made from real potatoes. Those will be sold in 7.4-ounce bags.

In other condiment news, the spicy ketchup will graduate from its previous limited-edition status to become available permanently at every one of its 740-plus restaurants in its 10-state service area.

Whataburger has gotten a lot of mileage from its spicy ketchup. The restaurant chain first released the not-really-that-spicy? condiment in January 2012 for a limited time, which helped ramp up the furor. When it went away, customers did what they usually do these days: created a Facebook page. Whataburger reissued it in March 2013 — which apparently resuscitated the enthusiasm sufficiently to persuade them to add it to the regular lineup.

As for the mustard, is it really one-of-a-kind? I can think of lots of mustards that are distinctive, but the Whataburger mustard doesn't seem that special.

Hate the burgers (wife likes the grilled chicken sandwich, though) — worst other than maybe Steak & Shake, but the spicy ketchup is great.

I personally consider their burgers to be the best. Very juicy, and it’s not small and frozen looking like the ones from McDonalds.

Had a friend in Texas tell me way back in 1976 that Whataburger was going to take over the U.S. and shut down McDonald’s. I’m still waiting, mind you I’m not knocking Whataburger, just still waiting.

You obviously have never had an In N Out burger (or even a Carl’s Jr. Super Star).

The patties from WAB look like little shriveled pieces of paper. And the onions and buns are tasteless.

I tried them 4 or 5 times after moving here to Texas (to be fair in case I just got a bad day). Terrible.

Never again.

Whataburger varies on punctuation,

Whataburger?
Whataburger!

OK, to be fair I’ll try that one (so I guess it isn’t Never Again).

I only have junk food once a week so it will be next weekend.

I had a coupon, so it was only $4 for that fries and a drink.

Just found this recently. Best mustard I've ever had. Wow! Very popular back East, I guess. Guy told me they use it a lot on hotdogs in some of the ballparks back East. But hard as heck to find out here in California's Central Valley.

Whataburger’s pretty good as far as fast food goes, definitely in the top tier of burger joints. The top two fast food desserts, IMHO are Whataburger’s Lemon Pie and Taco Bell’s Caramel Apple Empanada.

There’s no reason why it shouldn’t happen. McDonalds ain’t got nothin on Whataburger.
