The Boy Scouts of America will likely continue banning atheists and other non-believers from their troops, even though it now accepts openly gay members among its ranks.
"I don't see that happening, at least not in the immediate future," said Neil Polzin, an Eagle Scout fired from his job in 2009 as a Boy Scout camp aquatics director, after he admitted he is an atheist.
"The focus has always been on the Scouts' discrimination against gays and it seems atheists were always on a back burner or not discussed at all," Polzin told The Christian Century.
Since May 23, when the Scouts voted to allow gay members – but not troop leaders – among their ranks, major organizations for nonbelievers have condemned their continuing exclusion from the organization.
Part of the Scouting oath is to "do my duty to God and my country," which many atheists prefer be changed to "good and my country," a request the BSA has refused.
In addition, some atheist children have been asked to leave troops after it was revealed they did not believe in God. There have been lawsuits filed, but the Supreme Court has ruled that the Boy Scouts is a private organization that can make its own membership rules.

The BSA caved like cowards. They’re a disgrace to everything they once stood for. A disgrace to God and country. I have nothing but abject contempt for the entire organization and anyone remaining associated with it.
I attended an Eagle Court of Honor today and my faith in the BSA has been strengthened. It was very moving. The young man who received his Eagle Scout award is just a wonderful kid! There were about 7 men in the Eagle’s Nest. Now this was pretty much a LDS event. I see how the LDS Church will continue to support the BSA and if others want to drop out so be it. “Morally straight!”
Had a discussion with some of the Scout leaders; they don’t even give the controversy a second thought; they keep busy serving the boys and their families.
Just asking, how many LDS “morally straight” men join the US Military?

That is sad. I was feeling pretty down about the controversy but today I attended an Eagle Court of Honor and my love and respect for BSA and LDS has been restored.
Oh, anything is possible. It was less than a year ago the Boy Scouts slammed the door on homos and said the issue was settled. Uh... not so fast. It turns out they lied.

I feel sorry for the young men in the BSA.
1. Past “always’s” mean squat today.
2. BSA has now caved. They will keep caving.
3. There will be gay scoutmasters as they have “compromised” into an idiotic position that is not logically defendable and is on its face hypocritical. You cannot have gay be ok for 17-old eagle scouts and when they turn 18, they’re out and can’t be scoutmasters. They aren’t not a threat one day, and then a threat because they hit a particular birthday.
4. They are no longer morally straight. They have abandoned their duty to God.
5. They are open season on their atheist position. It will take five years or sooner before this goes down.
